Microbiologist

**QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE**
- National Diploma or BTech / BSc in Microbiology, Food Technology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry or a related tertiary science qualification
- 3-5 years’ experience
- Sufficient knowledge and experience of relevant microbiology methods
- Knowledge of ISO/IEC 17025:2017, previous technical signatory experience will be advantageous

**JOB OBJECTIVES**
- Maintenance and verification of equipment according to laboratory procedures.
- Preparation, maintenance and control of media, control cultures and reagents required for microbiological analyses.
- Analysing samples for routine and non-routine tests. Experience in food, hygiene swabs and water analyses will be advantageous.
- Logging samples and capturing results onto LIMS.
- Take responsibility for evaluation and approving results if authorised as a technical signatory.
- Participation in proficiency testing and other quality assurance activities as prescribed by the laboratory.
- Updating of quality control charts; precision charts and uncertainty of measurement spreadsheets.
- Executing duties according to prescribed methods, standard operating procedures and ISO/IEC 17025:2017 requirements.
- Filing and maintain in good order the required copies of all records such as raw of data, certificates, reports, etc.
- Acquaint themselves with and adhere to all the policies laid down in the quality documentation.
- Maintain proper housekeeping in working areas.
- Writing up of methods and procedures for approval by Lab Manager/Quality Manager.
- Set up new methods and procedures where required.
- Carry out method validations.
- Manage stock levels of chemicals and laboratory consumables and ensure prompt ordering of items and removal of expired stock from use.
- Improve laboratory / quality control activities on a continuous basis.
- Identify deviations from the management system or from procedures for performing laboratory activities and reports to management or senior personnel.
- Report and correct deficiencies or malfunctions, carry out root cause analysis, correct and clear non-conformances.
- Oversee technical work performed by junior microbiologists, intern, laboratory assistants, other microbiologists and staff performing lab activities.
- Training of staff on laboratory activities.
- Assist the Laboratory Manager / Technical Signatories / Quality department with requests.
