Sewer Operator

PURPOSE

***To sew the product to **produce product** according to the **shift production plan**, in line with the agreed **quality standards** and **product specifications,** during an allocated shift, to ensure that Belgotex Customer Service, Volume and operational efficiencies are realized through efficient production, adherence to plan and high-quality output of manufactured product.

SPAN OF CONTROL

This Sewing Operator is responsible to sew the carpet produced during the shift to a specific width according to the specification.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES & OUTPUTS

Production Management - Deep Focus Backing Operator to produce product to achieve the shift production plan (volumes across all the machines) ensuring product specifications and quality standards are adhered to. This including:
Sewer
- Check quality of the material before sewing on.
- To follow the backing sequence.
- Report any mechanical / electrical defects to superior.
- Align the carpet straight on the machine before sewing.
- Report all problems experienced to the supervisor.
- Monitor stock levels of all material used and inform Supervisor timeously.
- Monitor machine settings and report deviations to Supervisor.
- To help fellow operators when the need arises.
- Must ensure that the steam is on for all products.
- Check that the identification on the roll corresponds with the roll.
- Ensure rolls are in correct direction before sewing together.
- All N.P joins to be re sewn.
- Ensure correct with poly is sewn for change overs.
- Filters must be cleaned when machine is stopped.
- Report any defects on carpet to supervisor.
- Check correct carpet is entered in Mahlo and is on when required.

Production Metrics
- Track all production made during the shift against the production plan and be able to supply the Shift Supervisor with an update.
- Track Grade 2, off quality and other waste levels during shift production to look for trends. Call the supervisor if any problems are experienced and work with the Shift Supervisor to find long term solutions.

Stakeholder relationships
- Attend daily shift team briefings and relay critical information to the Shift Supervisor to be constantly updated of issues requiring attention
- Constantly update the shift supervisor on quality standards and product specific issues during the shift
- Work with the other shift operators to implement solutions to quality defects or product specification issues detectedReporting and Documentation
- Ensure that all processes, recipes, and production specifications are **documented** into required SOP and process flow formats and stored centrally as per agreed document management system.
- Ensure the most up to date SOPs and _transactional documentation_ are followed to ensure consistency of process.
- Work with the Shift Supervisor to implement **continuous improvement** processes to improve output, reduce variability and manage operational constraints. Safety, Health, Environment - We Tread Softly
- Perform all shift activities that ensure compliance with applicable safety, health and environment legislation and audit requirements
- Report any safety defects to the Shift Supervisor
- Clean the Backing department to ensure that housekeeping standards are always maintained
- Dispose of waste and keep the Backing areas neat at tidy and ensure housekeeping is kept to **5S standard**:

- Ensure Le Roche is cleaned and in good working condition

Follow any reasonable work instruction as may be required from time to time.

**REQUIREMENTS**:
Knowledge and skill
- 1 years’ experience as a machine operator.
- Good knowledge and understanding of ISO 90001 is advantageous.
- To assist in other Departments when required.
- Must be willing and able to lift heavy equipment when required to.
- Must be able and willing to work shifts.
