- Health financing to achieve Universal Health Coverage

**Fellowship Overview**:

- This is a highly exciting and important opportunity to build health financing and health economics capacity on the African continent and in South Africa in particular
- As countries strive to achieve universal health coverage, it is critical to understand how to raise money for health services and to understand what the right services to purchase would be to improve overall population health
- The National Institute for Healthcare Research (NIHR) UK has provided a multi-year grant to leading institutions in five middle-income countries (Brazil, Indonesia, India, and South Africa) to enhance understanding and promulgate new tools to improve health financing for universal health coverage
- The successful applicant will work on doctoral-level research under the supervision of PRICELESS staff, and with co-supervision from local and internationally renowned health economists to develop a research question that would help tackle the identified challenges to achieving universal health access in South Africa
- The student will be expected to become an expert in the use of health economic modeling techniques and in global health financing discussions unfolding worldwide
- Conference presentation opportunities and learning exchanges will be provided as part of this grant

**Required minimum education and training**:

- **Master’s Degree in Health Economics, Biostatistics, or related quantitative field**

**Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities**:

- Meet the requirements for a PhD at Wits University
- Familiarity and knowledge of health financing would be an advantage
- Demonstrated writing and communication skills
