Laboratory Analyst

**Solvita & Mycorrhizal Root Colonisation (Root Staining)**:

- Capture all external samples received for Solvita analysis and Myco Root Colonisation on the same receipt record along with all relevant information.
- Ensure all external samples received for analysis are accompanied by a submission form - if not contact client/Agent and acquire completed submission form.
- Inform Microbial Team Leader when external samples received for analysis.
- Process samples submitted for Solvita and Root Staining according to protocol.
- Evaluate results according to protocol, capture raw data and write preliminary report and forward to Microbial Team Leader for editing.

**Mycorrhizae Spore Count/Quality control (“Wash & Count”)**:

- Ensure all samples submitted to the lab for Mycorrhizal spore count are received, recorded and labelled as per protocol including concentrated Myco powder as well as final products and test samples.
- Accurately wash and count spores in samples submitted to lab as per protocol and capture raw data on relevant control sheet.
- Decant left over concentrated Myco-powder and liquid into relevant containers and store final product samples as needed.
- Assist with continuous evaluation and improvement of protocol under guidance of Microbial Team Leader

**Trichoderma Plate Count Method/Quality Control**:

- Ensure all samples submitted for plate count method are received, recorded and labelled as per protocol including concentrated powder as well as final products and test samples.
- Accurately process samples per the protocol and capture raw data on relevant control worksheet.
- Clean equipment and work areas after completion.
- Assist with continuous evaluation and improvement of protocol under guidance of Microbial Team Leader.

**Production Management of Trichoderma & Other Niche Microbial Products**:

- Assist Microbial Team Leader with management of the production and stock levels on set sales targets as and when required.
- Ensure isolation. Maintenance and purification of mother cultures for production, quality control and intellectual property purposes
- Assist Microbial Team Leader with drafting, implementing and management of cleaning and production schedules.

**Shelf-Life/Viability**:

- Conduct routine analysis of samples submitted for shelf-life evaluation.
- For external shelf-life analysis obtain quotes for different tests to be executed on samples and submit to Microbial Team Leader for approval prior to arranging shipment.

**Laboratory Administration**:

- Assist Laboratory Controller with:

- preparation and execution of monthly stock takes for the laboratories;
- procurement of stock including obtaining quotes, liaison with suppliers, filing purchase orders and processing tax invoices.
- Adhere to and maintain hard copy and electronic document filing system in an orderly and optimal manner.
- Assist Laboratory Controller with maintenance and managing servicing schedules of all laboratory equipment ensuring regular maintenance and calibration (where necessary).

**Housekeeping**:

- Ensure effective housekeeping and deep cleaning in accordance with laboratory cleaning procedures.
- Maintain high level of cleanliness and order in the laboratories ensuring that satisfactory sterilisation has been achieved with the use of thorough cleaning techniques and effective disinfectants.
- Perform other housekeeping tasks for which the incumbent is competent.

**Ad hoc tasks**:

- On occasion required to carry out ad hoc tasks for which the incumbent is competent.
- Assist with planting/execution of and harvesting/processing of trials, including preparation of greenhouses and seeds for trials.
- Processing samples for trial purposes including sorting, washing, drying, labelling and measuring of different parameters as requested.

Assist in production process of microbial products (i.e. Trichoderma (as well as other).

**Qualifications & Experience**:

- Minimum education Grade 12 with post matric qualification of a B.Sc. or Technical Science degree focused on Bio-technology or related scientific field.
- Minimum of 2 years’ work related experience in a commercial setting in a similar role.
- Possess sound working knowledge of microbial culturing and upkeep of cultures.
- Sound knowledge of laboratory practices.
- Knowledge of SHEQ Management System requirements advantageous.
- Computer literate MS Office (Word/PowerPoint/Excel)
- Ability to work under pressure, be deadline driven and self-motivated.
- Ability to operate in a multi-disciplinary environment
- Must be in possession of a valid driver’s licence, have own reliable transport and be medically fit to drive.
- Possess ability to maintain and acceptable attendance record and punctuality.
- A sound knowledge of laboratory administration, laboratory procurement and laboratory servicing needs required.
