**Role Purpose**

South Africa’s transition to renewable energy presents some exciting opportunities, but also many challenges for biodiversity conservation. As one of the largest, most active non-governmental conservation organisations in South Africa, BirdLife South Africa (BLSA) endeavours to address potential conflicts between these challenges and opportunities in the renewable energy sector. Our Birds and Renewable Energy Project has over a decade of experience - especially in the provision of evidence-based advice to inform decisions regarding the location and management of renewable energy infrastructure, development of Best Practice Guidelines and establishment of relationships with key stakeholders.

**Inherent Requirements**
- An applicable qualification, for instance a relevant Bachelor’s degree (e. in Commerce, Life Sciences, Natural Sciences, Environmental Sciences, or Law), but a post-graduate qualification would be advantageous.
- At least five years of relevant experience, resulting in:

- A proven record of excellent stakeholder engagement, including the ability to collaborate with key stakeholders, donors, funders, and government officials.
- Familiarity with energy planning, renewable energy project development and management.
- Working knowledge of South Africa’s environmental legislation and project financiers’ environmental risk management policies and standards.
- Relevant project and other managerial skills, including monitoring and evaluation and financial administration (5 years).
- A proven track record in successful fundraising, identifying donor prospects, donor cultivation and/or grant writing (including familiarity with international donor requirements e.g. Theory of Change, Logical Framework and similar methodologies).
- Superior writing and communication skills (with fluency in English), and ability to interact with diverse audiences.
- Skillful use of the Microsoft Office suite.

**Responsibilities**:

- Providing strategic leadership to the Birds and Renewable Energy Project, including by managing and supporting project staff and exploring and capitalising on new opportunities to enhance the project’s contribution to a nature-friendly transition to renewable energy.
- Establishing an Advisory Committee to provide strategic ideas for scaling up BirdLife South Africa’s support of a nature-friendly transition to renewable energy.
- Securing the financial and other resources needed to sustain and scale up the Birds and Renewable Energy Project in the medium
- Establishing relationships with, and providing advice to, renewable energy financiers and other key stakeholders (including through dedicated workshops), with a view to supporting improved understanding of the risks, opportunities and responsibilities related to renewable energy development and biodiversity conservation.
- Supporting and encouraging stakeholders to collaborate and share information and resources (both within South Africa and regionally) so that renewable energy development is sensitive to nature - including by, _inter alia_, organising an annual Birds (Biodiversity) and Renewable Energy Forum and supporting the establishment of an African Wind Wildlife Partnership.
- Encouraging renewable energy operators to contribute positively to biodiversity conservation. To this end, establish an award to recognise and showcase examples of best practices and innovation, and undertake biennial assessments of the performance of operational wind energy facilities as a basis for conferring this award.
