**Job description**
- The Department of Chemical Sciences is proud to be one of the largest departments at University of Johannesburg and in South Africa. In terms of teaching, the Department offers all the four core disciplines of chemistry, i.e., Analytical, Physical, Organic and Inorganic Chemistry. Our research focusses on several aspects including water treatment and purification, natural products, catalysis, computational chemistry, sensors, devices, nanomaterials, materials science, energy (solar, fuel cells, and supercapacitors), etc. The Department is also a host to SARChI chair in nanotechnology and water.
- Apart from presenting lectures in Chemistry to undergraduate and honours students, the appointee will be expected to actively conduct research, supervise postgraduate students, and be involved in the other activities of the Department.

**Responsibilities**:

- In line with the Department of Higher Education and training's New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP), the
Faculty of Science at the University of Johannesburg is seeking to make a permanent appointment of a lecturer in the
Department of Chemical Sciences. We are seeking an exceptionally motivated, qualified, and ambitious aspirant academic to contribute to and expand the faculty’s current teaching and research interests/specialisations.
- In particular, the incumbent will be expected to:_
- Obtain a PhD in the required field, if not already held.
- Prepare and deliver lectures for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
- Prepare and conduct practical sessions for the students.
- Prepare and mark assignments, tests, and exams.
- Assist with developing course material for undergraduate and postgraduate modules.
- Supervise postgraduate students.
- Attend departmental and faculty meetings and participate in other activities of the Department.
- Perform administrative duties.
- Actively conduct research and establish their own research niche in Chemistry and participate in research activities
leading to publication of articles.
- Participate in Community Engagement initiatives in the Department and Faculty

**Minimum requirements**
- MSc in Chemistry (min.70% pass mark).
- Experience or previous participation in developing, conducting, and overseeing/demonstrating undergraduate practical sessions in Chemistry.
- Proven experience of dealing with chemical laboratory waste.
- Demonstratable awareness of the requirements of Laboratory safety Act.
- Be able to teach physical chemistry.
- Excellent communication skills in English.
- Previous lecturing experience will be an added advantage.
- Experience in some of Spectroscopic, surface characterization, spectrometry, chromatography, microscopy, speciation, and thermal analysis techniques such as TEM, SEM, GC, MS, LC-MS, PXRD, SCXRD, AAS, Raman, FTIR, TGA, DSC, BET etc.

**Competencies and Behavioural Attributes**:

- Knowledge of Chemistry taught in undergraduate programmes is a must.
- A team player with a passion for student training and research
- Be competent in both oral and written communication.
- A problem solver.

**Recommendations**:

- PhD degree
- Previous postgraduate supervision experience will be an added advantage.
- At least 2 years’ experience of participating in organizing and managing undergraduate practical sessions and student assistants or tutors for chemistry students is a strong recommendation.
- Research track record in Chemistry.
- Demonstrated ability/experience to work with a multidisciplinary team.
- Ability to perform research, teaching, and administration simultaneously.
