**Tasks and duties**:

- Discussing symptoms and issues with vehicle owner to discover faults and testdriving vehicle.
- Testing individual components and functions of vehicle to detect source of issues.
- Operating specialised equipment to connect to vehicle's onboard diagnostic system and repair faults.
- Repairing and replacing defective or worn parts on vehicle such as engines, transmissions, steering columns, brakes and suspension.
- Using specialised computer software to diagnose and fix electronic faults with engine management system.
- Performing scheduled services and maintenance, including oil changes; fluid, lubricant and coolant top-ups and engine tune-ups.
- Dismantling mechanical assemblies to perform repairs, testing and cleaning.
- Reassembling parts after performing repairs and testing vehicle performance for desired result.
- Inspecting vehicles for roadworthiness and issuing roadworthy certificates.
- Performing minor body and trim repairs.
- Using oxy, electric, TIG and MIG welders.

Mechanical Technicians are skilled in mechanical repairs and the use of tools such as welders. They have good manual dexterity and enjoy working with their hands. They are employed in the automotive and transport industries and usually work in workshops, often in the service department of a car dealership or in an independent garage.
