The Lay Counsellor is responsible for providing HIV/AIDS testing and counselling. The Lay Counsellor also renders psychosocial support counselling and continued adherence support for participants.

**Technical Work Responsibilities**
- HIV testing and counselling (HTC)
- Couples counselling
- Gender Based Violence counselling.
- Provide a linkage from diagnosis to HIV care and treatment.
- Provide adherence counselling and patient education for:

- Initiation and continued adherence support for patients on ART

- Patients on medication for treatment of drug-sensitive TB and multi
- drug resistant TB, TB prevention and contact tracing.
- Facilitation of community-supported models of ART delivery
- Identification of process inadequacies and recommendations
- Utilise the specified counselling method (Next Step counselling) and recommend an effective counselling strategy in accordance with the relevant legislation and policies.
- Inform line management of any suspicion of social/self-harm.
- Hand over positive clients who are not ready for initiation to Case Facilitator
- Provide information and counsel on PrEP initiations.

**_Education_**
- Grade 12
- HIV/AIDS Counselling and Testing Certificate _ Advantageous_
- Relationship Counselling Certificate
- Gender Based Violence Counselling Certificate

**_Experience_**
- 2 years’ HIV testing and counselling
- 2 years’ HIV and TB community education and mobilisation
