**JOB DESCRIPTION: MARINE CLAIMS TECHNICIAN**

This position involves the co-ordinating, processing and management of marine liability and cargo claims. The Claims Technician is responsible for ensuring claims are handled professionally, accurately and swiftly in order to uphold our high standard of service levels to our clients.

**SCOPE OF THE POSITION**

The Claims Technician reports to both the Marine Liability and the Marine Cargo Claims Manager and is responsible for providing effective management and processing of claims. Providing a professional claims service is critical to the business as claims servicing is considered the “shop window’ to our business. The successful execution of the incumbent’s duty will ensure that our high standards and service levels are maintained at all times.

**RESPONSIBILITIES**

Provide claims management to ensure deadlines are maintained and service levels upheld. This will include _inter alia _the following responsibilities;
- Reporting, recording and managing claims and related recoveries
- Appointment of assessors/surveyors and attorneys
- Liaising and maintaining a good relationship with internal brokers, clients, insurers and experts
- Negotiating claim settlements with insurers
- Documenting reasons for agreed decisions
- Processing claim payments
- Managing claims diary and general claims administrative functions
- Monitoring and reporting on claims statistics and trends
- Initiating meetings with Senior Management to discuss complex claims or repudiations

**KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES**

**Knowledge**
- Knowledge of Short Term Insurance, preferably Marine Insurance and/or marine liability insurance and/or small craft insurance

**AND/OR**
- Have completed a legal degree at university level (i.e. LLB or similar)

The incumbent will preferably have knowledge in the following areas:

- Knowledge of shipping documentation associated with the freight industry
- Knowledge of the FAIS Act and other legislation/Acts that govern the short term insurance industry
- Ability to analyse and interpret contracts in the supply chain

**Qualifications**
- The incumbent must have passed or be willing to study towards FAIS regulatory exams (RE1 for reps)
- The incumbent will preferably have a maritime law qualification and / or experience in maritime industry and / or legal qualification and/or marine insurance qualification

**WORKING CONDITIONS**

The Claims Technician position is a highly demanding and pressurised position that requires a high level of accuracy and concentration and ability to deal with conflict. The position is extremely mentally demanding and deadlines must be adhered to as well as the service levels maintained.

**PHYSICAL DEMANDS**

The incumbent will spend long hours sitting and using office equipment in order to carry out their work responsibilities.
