Overhead Crane Operator

The **Overhead Crane Operator** is responsible for operating a stationary or mobile overhead crane to move, lift and position materials safely at construction sites. The successful incumbent should operate cranes efficiently, take complete charge of all safety, clean and maintain the hoisting mechanisms, and handle the process of job billing. Ultimately, a top-notch crane operator should set and maintain a standard of accuracy, be able to work in extreme weather conditions, and operate the crane according to verbal, written, or signal instruction.

**Key Responsibilities**:

- Maintaining crane safety through inspection, operation, maintenance, and repair of equipment, including rigging.
- Observing work being done by others to ensure that it meets safety standards and good construction practices.
- Operating cranes to move construction materials such as steel beams, concrete blocks, and pipes from one location to another.
- Coordinating with other construction workers to lift materials into place or remove them as needed.
- Operating hoists to lift, lower, move, or position materials or equipment.
- Coordinating with other workers to perform the installation or removal of equipment such as rigging, scaffolding, and lifting devices.
- Inspecting equipment and structures to ensure they are safe and stable.
- Operating cranes using controls that are located inside or outside the cab depending on the type of crane used.
- Maintaining logbooks of crane operations, equipment checks, and maintenance activities.
- Procure and inspect rigging, attach rigging to load, check travel path, sound whistle, signal crane operator, guide load to destination, position load, detach rigging and return to storage rack.
- Ensure load is properly secured.
- Review rigging work prior to lifting.
- Operating the crane under limited supervision.
- Inspecting the crane to ensure its safety.
- Performing routine maintenance.
- Carrying tools for running repairs.
- Understanding and executing the job billing process.
- Driving the crane to a worksite.
- Wearing PPE safety equipment.
- Cleaning and maintaining the crane hoisting mechanism.
- Using lever and pedal controls efficiently.
- Setting up the manufacturer’s operator manual.

**Essential Requirements**:

- Matric (Grade 12)
- Overhead crane operator certification
- 5+ years’ experience as an overhead crane operator
- 5+ years’ rigging experience is essential.
- Proven safety record with no accidents or incidents
- Ability to operate 25-ton overhead crane with uneven distribution.
- Excellent hand-eye coordination.
- Working knowledge of OSHA standards and regulations
- Experience with computerized crane operation systems
- Familiarity with quality control procedures
- No criminal record
