Reporting directly to the Country Manager and matrix into the Head of Underwriting for Corso South Africa, you will be examining, underwriting and developing business in accordance with defined marketing objectives and profitability targets. Your responsibilities will include communicating with brokers and existing clients and identifying new prospective clients and business segments, whilst at the same time managing the portfolios which have been assigned to you.

**Key responsibilities**:

- Triage new submissions and find opportunities to position Swiss Re Corporate Solutions on a programme at the earliest possible stage, in South Africa and across the Rest of Africa;
- Assessing the risk, coverage, terms and conditions. Rate the business within the available rating tool landscape.
- Communicate proactively, timely and with transparency with clients and brokers in order to set the foundation for a positive outcome.
- Underwrite the business within guidelines, adhere to LTPA targets agreed upon and contest efficiently and effectively. Where suitable, gather corresponding guideline exemptions.
- Promote positive interaction and collaboration with other partners, such as client managers, risk engineers, claims, contracts services, actuarial services, products underwriters etc.
- Negotiate with clients and brokers in cooperation with the client manager.
- Support local origination efforts while collaborating with brokers and clients.

**Your skills and experience**:

- Minimum 5 years in underwriting
- Experience in Property Underwriting in Insurance and/or Broking
- Experience in other niche markets such as Engineering, Mining, Energy, Construction etc. would be ideal
- Highly preferable for someone to have a successful track record in client management, if not, then the ability to engage with clients (depending on position level)
- Develop strategies to expand position on current accounts and to cross-sell other lines of business in cooperation with the client manager
- Ability to handle large client dataset consistently, timeously and independently
- Deep understanding of risk selection and underwriting practice (including risk management, industry assessment, client risk appetite and rating methodologies)
- Solid understanding of policy language, coupled with ability to interpret the structure of insurance contracts and challenge clauses where necessary, drawing on market knowledge
- Strong communication, presentation and negotiating skills
- International working/company experience is an advantage
- Exposure to working in the broader African markets will be ideal
- Proficient in English
