Nursing Services Manager

The Nursing Services Manager is to deliver expert overall nursing management of the unit.
This includes the coordination of all functions and activities related to the provision, promotion and assurance of quality patient care, through the leadership of a multidisciplinary team in consultation with all relevant stakeholders. The Nursing Services Manager will assume responsibility for motivating, supporting and optimizing staff performance through capacity building, mentoring and training thereby ensuring that an optimum contribution is made to the successful functioning of the hospital.
**REQUIREMENTS**:
A relevant nursing qualification (Diploma in General Nursing / B Cur Degree)
Registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Registered Nurse
A post basic qualification in Nursing Administration
A relevant business management qualification is advantageous
A minimum of 5 years management as a Unit Manager or Nursing Manager experience within a private sector
**RESPONSIBILITIES**:

Evaluating RNs' job performance and providing coaching as needed.
Providing support to RNs, patients and patient's families as needed.
Responding to inquiries from other department heads.
Making budgetary decisions.

Collaborates with nursing teams and multidisciplinary professional staff.
Maintains nursing staff by coaching, counseling, and disciplining through monitoring and appraising nurses’ job performance.
Monitor safety standards in accordance with the Machine and Occupational Safety Act (Act 6 of 1983).
Report all accidents and incidents to Senior Unit Director / Safety Representatives.
Communicate effectively with units’ managers.
Demonstrate an integrated knowledge of the business mission, value proposition and value chain by presenting clear action items related for nursing initiatives in response to more challenges or opportunities facing the hospital.
Maintains nursing staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training nurses and auxiliary staff.
Moves others to action by translating the vision and values into day-to-day activities and guiding others to take the appropriate action steps to support the vision and values.
Create an environment where staff are aware of the role, they play in the provision of quality nursing care and their value to the organization.
Develop talented nursing leaders through mentorship and coaching.
Facilitate effective change and conflict management.
Create conditions of willingness and participation amongst teams by providing sufficient encouragement, information, resources and authority to make the necessary decisions to accomplish tasks.
Monitor staff attendance and / or absenteeism and ensure action is taken accordingly.
Maintains a safe and clean working environment by designing health procedures and protocols.
Manage, advise and influence the delivery of cost-effective quality nursing care in line with Clinical Governance strategy and evidence-based practice.
Management of the nursing budget as well as understanding the financial fundamentals of the healthcare business.
Manage all costs emanating from all clinical departments.
Build strategic interdepartmental relationships to help achieve business goals.
Promote sound staff, patient and doctor relationships.
Foster an effective working relationship with service providers.
Ensure correct billing, stock management and purchasing.
Efficient stock management and control.
**CORE CHARACTERISTICS REQUIRED**:
Effective Communication — Part of being an effective leader is listening to staff and patient concerns and communicating their needs. Nurse managers must be able to build a solid rapport with all staff members, from the janitorial staff to head administrators, as well as with patients.
Advocacy — In some cases, nurse leaders might have to advocate for staff to ensure a safe and reasonable practice environment. In other cases, they might have to advocate for patient safety and access to quality health care. Nurse managers should not be afraid of using their voices and position.
Participation — With so many administrative demands, it is important that nurse managers balance business with patient care. Nurse managers must have superior clinical skills to ensure patient safety and well-being.
Mentoring — Successful nurse leaders do not micromanage their staff. They encourage, empower, mentor, and find strengths. They boost creativity and mindfulness.
Maturity — Nurse managers do not immediately take sides in squabbles or assess blame before knowing all the facts. They don’t let simmering emotions boil over. Instead, they meet conflict and work through it.
Professionalism — Nurse managers follow their moral compass to ensure all aspects of the profession are met with honesty and integrity. They address people with respect and do not bully.
