**Reporting to**: Head of Technology

**Description of key performance areas**:

- Responsible for managing the Material Science (analytical and physical testing) laboratory to maximise productivity and efficiency of staff, and to provide support to the Technology, Operations, QHSE, Procurement and Commercial teams.
- Ensure adherence to ISO 9001 policies and procedures as well as national and international certification of the company’s products.

**Key performance areas/main responsibilities**:
**Liaison with external entities**
- Accreditation & approvals - Responsible for arranging national and international accreditation testing and approval of company products and maintenance thereof. (e.g., SANAS 17025, SABS, SAHPRA, Lloyds, UL & Warrington Fire) in accordance with the relevant standards & specifications. Maintenance of literature on standard test methods based on SABS, ISO, ASTM, AS/NZ, and BS standards.

**Service to internal & external customers**

**Utilising Analytical, Instrumental, Wet Chemistry and Physical testing methodology**:

- To assist the Technology team with formulating new and/or improving existing polymer products
- To assist Operations, QHSE, Procurement and Commercial (includes external customers) teams as required.
- To conduct customer complaint and root cause investigations (RCI) and to recommend corrective actions.

**Approvals & testing of raw materials**
- Responsible for evaluating new and/or alternate raw materials. Maintaining & updating the register of approved raw materials & suppliers

**Method development**
- Conduct research and method development of current in-house testing methods with special attention to international practices. Maintain a database of company as well as international test methods that are relevant to the industry that company operates within.

**Troubleshooting of equipment / instruments**
- Conduct internal calibrations on equipment where relevant. Maintain the instruments in a workable condition and trouble-shoot them for any malfunctions which may invalidate previous results and calibration of equipment.
- Contact and arrange with external service providers for any anomalies and related issues with instruments to repair, service and/or calibrate accordingly.

**Administration**
- Management of material science laboratory which includes supervision of staff as well as preparation and management of fixed cost & capex budget.
- Inherent Requirements

**Qualifications**:
Minimum BSc Chemistry or BTech Analytical Chemistry

**Experience**:

- 5 years relevant industry experience.
- Hands-on experience with analytical & physical property testing of polymer
- based castings & composites utilising analytical instrumentation (e.g., GC, HPLC, GPC, DSC, FTIR, Potentiometric titrators, UV Vis.) and mechanical instrumentation (e.g., Tensiometer, HDT Vicat, QUV, turtle box, thermal shock rig, bandsaw).
- Ability to conduct all types of analysis on composition of liquid & cured polymers and to interpret results. Experience in managing a team.
