Medical Scientist

**Main purpose of the job**:

- To perform night shift work for transplant testing, daytime, and call-out related transplant duties as and when required
- To perform laboratory diagnostic, surveillance, and research activities, including analysis and interpretation of data, to conduct research relevant to the discipline

**Location**:

- **Braamfontein - Johannesburg**

**Key performance areas**:

- Perform laboratory tests_
- Project management
- Perform routine diagnostic and surveillance tests
- Interpret test results together with epidemiological data
- Interpret test results associated with outbreak investigations
- Perform tests related to research projects
- Troubleshooting wherever necessary e.g. identifying and solving technical problems
- Laboratory administration_
- Ensure maintenance is carried out where required
- Monitor and control stock levels
- Monitor and control workflows and turnaround times
- Respond to and report quality control issues to the laboratory manager
- Demonstrate cost consciousness and assists in meeting budgetary targets
- Filing of records of worksheets
- Quality Control_
- Applies and interprets results of internal and external quality assessment tests
- Ensure all tests are validated before implementation
- Reports quality-related problems and attempts to solve them and reports to the laboratory manager

**Required minimum education and training**:

- **BSC (Hons) Degree**

**Required minimum work experience**:

- **Minimum of 22 months (post-university qualification) experience in Medical Science/Microbiology/Laboratory/PCR/Data Capture and Management of Data**

**Professional body registration**:

- HPCSA registered as a Medical Scientist in the relevant field

**Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities**:

- Must be a team player
- Must perform equally well with routine diagnostic/surveillance activities and research
- Must be a well-organized individual
- Must be able to pay attention to detail
- Good time management skills and must always meet deadlines
- Occasionally will be required to be on-call and perform work after hours and on weekends/public holidays
- Must be computer literate
