Shaft Timberman

**PURPOSE OF THE JOB**:
To safely construct, install and maintain shaft structures and equipment

**MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS**:

- Grade 12 /NQF Level 4 is essential
- Valid Onsetter and Blasting Certificate is essential
- 1 - 3 years working experience as a Banksman/Onsetter is essential
- 1 - 3 years working experience as a Shaft Timberman is essential
- Working exposure in a vertical shaft environment is essential
- Valid medical certificate or be medically fit in order to obtain such a certificate

**COMPETENCIES**:

- Signal on a lock-bell system
- Demonstrate an understanding of shaft signals
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of blasting products and their usage in an underground hard rock environment
- Demonstrate knowledge of the importance of the safe movement of men, material and equipment in the bank and shaft area
- Demonstrate knowledge of the importance of maintaining the shaft in good working order

**KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS**:

- Install swing barricades and sets of rails in an underground workplace
- Install and remove pipes and accessories
- Construct underground ladder-ways
- Clear blockages from shaft ore passes
- Prepare conveyances for shaft examination and repairs
- Receive, handle, store and issue explosives and accessories at workplaces
- Transport explosives and accessories by means of rolling stock
- Load and remove rolling stock and load persons into and from shaft conveyances
- Load long material into and out of shaft conveyances
- Maintain housekeeping standards in the work area
- Conduct on-the-job training and coaching
