Job Requirements: Forklift Driver (Import and Export - Container Environment)
1. Education and Experience:
Grade 12
Minimum of 2 years of experience operating forklifts in a port, warehouse, or container yard environment.
Experience with offloading/loading containers and trucks is essential.
2. Certification and Licensing:
Valid forklift driver certification/license for operating 7-ton to 20-ton forklifts.
Knowledge of and compliance with relevant national forklift operating standards and safety regulations.
3. Technical Skills:
Proven experience in operating heavy-duty forklifts (7-ton to 20-ton) for loading and offloading containers and trucks.
Proficient in handling a variety of cargo, including oversized or delicate items.
Familiarity with load balancing, securing cargo, and using different attachments (e.g., clamps, rotators) for specialized tasks.
Job-Specific Knowledge:
Strong understanding of container loading/unloading processes and logistics in an import/export environment.
Ability to read and understand shipping manifests, Bills of Lading, and related paperwork for loading accuracy.
Knowledge of warehouse management systems (WMS) or basic experience with logistics software is an advantage.
5. Physical Requirements:
Ability to operate a heavy-duty forklift in outdoor environments, including varying weather conditions.
6. Core Responsibilities:
Safely and efficiently load and unload containers from trucks and ships using 7-ton to 20-ton forklifts.
Verify the contents of containers against shipping paperwork and report any discrepancies.
Ensure proper stacking, storage, and securing of containers or cargo to avoid damage or accidents.
Perform routine checks and maintenance of the forklift to ensure its proper functioning (e.g., checking fluid levels, inspecting tires).
7. Communication and Interpersonal Skills:
Good communication skills for coordinating with warehouse personnel, supervisors, and truck drivers.
Ability to follow instructions from management and work in coordination with logistics teams.
Problem-solving skills to handle unexpected challenges, such as equipment malfunctions or cargo discrepancies.
8. Attention to Detail and Safety:
Strong attention to detail when handling fragile, hazardous, or valuable cargo.
Compliance with all safety guidelines, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to workplace safety protocols.
Awareness of hazards related to operating forklifts around pedestrians, in busy environments, and near moving vehicles.
9. Time Management and Flexibility:
Ability to manage time efficiently, meet deadlines, and work in a fast-paced environment.
Willingness to work shifts, including weekends, nights, and holidays, as required by the shipping schedule.
10. Safety and Compliance:
Knowledge of safe loading limits and forklift capabilities to prevent accidents and cargo damage.
Understanding and following company policies regarding safety, environmental practices, and handling sensitive or high-risk cargo.
