This is a Permeant role with part time hours

Serves as a medical consultant to the South African markets for traditional life underwriting, living benefits and claims. Evaluates medical tests/information, assesses risks, and research medical procedures and information. Provides ongoing education and training for underwriters and claims examiners internally or at local industry seminars, as required. Working with product development teams to provide technical medical advice and input into product development opportunities as they arise. Maintains expert general knowledge of medicine, current developments and research for new product and strategic business initiatives. Assist pricing teams, claims and underwriting teams for guideline developments, as required.

**Responsibilities** Operational Support**
- Serves as medical consultant for underwriting of traditional cases. Products underwritten will include life and living benefits including critical illness, disability, hospitalization, and medical reimbursement. Maintain SLA levels for CMO feedback on claims and UW cases.
- Read ECGs and stress test and evaluates medical tests/information.
- Performs mortality and morbidity assessment.
- Performs medical literature research to evaluate cases as needed.
- Provides medical opinion to the claims team to assist in the adjudication of life and living benefit claims including critical illness, terminal illness benefit, and disability, hospital cash, disability income.
- Meets deadlines and on own initiative submits decisions to the required controls.
- Actively participates in improving operational efficiencies and building RGA risk assessment philosophy

**Business Development / Strategic**
- Provide technical medical advice and comment to business development and marketing teams on relevant aspects of product development.
- Support any new strategic or business development activities as required.
- Continually survey new market and medical trends, changes of regulation and other factors that could influence strategic initiatives or product development.
- Provide input into product development or other strategic initiates on innovation topics, HealthTech, and integrating solutions with lifestyle and other data.
- Ensure a high-level communication and cooperation between claims, underwriting, actuaries, business development and all other departments as required.

**Research and Development**
- Provide advice, medical literature review and research, and relevant statistics on setting assumptions for product pricing or pricing basis/matrix reviews.
- Provide advice, medical literature review and research, and relevant statistics to aid medical risk selection or set underwriting standards.
- Assist in developing and integrating medical advances or medical practice policies into underwriting guidelines and manuals and risk assessment questions, as required.
- Cooperate and support RGA medical team with opinion or research or peer review, as required.

**Public Relations / Marketing / Education and Training**
- Provides ongoing education and training for RGA and client underwriters and claims examiners through formal presentations, or on an ad hoc basis
- Meets with RGA clients and presents on medical topics at industry meetings and seminars
- Maintains strong relationships with RGA client CMO’s
- Writes articles for medical director’s newsletter or other relevant marketing material
- Contributes information for company medical publication(s) when required
- Attend SA events and seminars to foster client relationships.
- Serves as a liaison with the medical community and other insurance professionals

**Requirements** Education and Experience**
- Medical Doctorate with a degree from an accredited medical school
- 5+ years insurance medicine experience underwriting cases, preferably in a Medical Director role.
- 5 + years clinical experience
- Licensed to practice medicine in applicable location
- Experience in the review of life and living benefits claims.
- Subspecialty training (i.e., insurance medicine board certification, internal medicine, cardiology, oncology, family practices, etc.)
- Experience in Insurance/Reinsurance underwriting
- Experience in setting underwriting standards, evaluating new procedures

**Skills and Abilities**:

- Highly advanced clinical skills
- Highly advanced knowledge of EKG’s and other tests associated with the underwriting process.
- Highly advanced ability to comprehend and interpret insurance and contract documents.
- Advanced knowledge of broad business practices
