- Effective daily supervision of the belt assistants to ensure conveyor belt availability, mínimal downtime as a result of prompt responses to breakdowns, prompt risk identification, communication and mitigation
- Safe operation of the conveyor belts (inspection, reporting, resetting, start and stop operation)
- Assist the appointed artisans with the construction & extension of belt structures
- Assist appointed artisans with the installation of belting, including splicing of belts and belt training
- Perform pre-start inspections, note deviations and perform minor maintenance andor report maintenance requirements to responsible artisans and supervisor
- Timeously repair pulley lagging, belt scrapers and belting under the direction of the artisan/supervisor
- Continuously monitor the belt (loads, size of material, wear and tear, correct conveyor belt operation) and report deviations to the control room and/or responsible artisans
- Report damages and abuse of equipment timeously
- Maintain proper housekeeping in and around the belt structure, cleaning spillages and build-ups
- Report unsafe conditions and safely remove any obstructions that could cause damage to the conveyor belt
- Comply with the code of good practice, relevant legislation, OEM specifications and M&RC’s policies, procedures, standards and safety protocols
- Effective self and team management in alignment with M&RC’s values and leadership initiatives
**Minimum requirements**
- Grade 12 or NQF 4 equivalent
- Beltsman Certificate
- Competency A & B Certificates
- Gas Testing and Flame Proofing Certificates (essential for coal projects)
- Valid Medical Certificate of Fitness
- Able to work at heights
- Excellent hand-eye coordination
- Able to maintain focus and concentration over long periods and under sustained physical stress
- Proactive problem solver who is able to operate under limited supervision
- Job planning and supervisory skills
- Good English verbal and written communication skills
- Minimum 5 years of experience operating, controlling, planning, maintaining and repairing conveyor belt systems in an underground mining environment
- Minimum 5 years of experience in belt installation, extensions, skiving and splicing
- Knowledge of belt training and experience supervising a team
- Sound working knowledge of the components and operation of a conveyor belt, condition monitoring and statutory requirements for conveyors in an underground mining environment
