**Synopsis**
ISA provides technical support to priority infrastructure projects and programmes, in line with the National Infrastructure Plan 2050. The focus of the programme is to accelerate priority infrastructure focusing on local government infrastructure projects (municipal water and sanitation) and national programmes such as rural bridges, schools, provincial roads and state buildings/precinct.

The incumbent will be required to promote sustainable construction methods in project implementation, identify environmental risks and build relationships with environmental authorities and stakeholders. Additionally, the incumbent will be required to provide technical support ISA clients and stakeholders. The Environmental Officer will provide specialised environmental support to the programmes.

**Qualification and Experience** QUALIFICATIONS**:

- NQF 7 qualification in Environmental Engineering/Science/ Management or other relevant qualification.
- Post graduate qualifications will be an added advantage.
- Registered Professional of the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNSP) or Professional registration with Engineering Council of South Africa

**EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE**:

- Minimum of 5 years working experience in environmental management in construction-related projects.
- Knowledge of applicable environmental, occupational health and safety laws in South Africa
- Ability to translate client’s specifications into project-specific procedures.
- Ability to conduct and document environmental aspects and impacts assessments.
- Participate in the establishment and implementation of the Environmental Management System.
- Monitor compliance to environmental requirements; conditions of the Environmental authorisation and recommendations of the Environmental Management Programme (EMP).
- Compile environmental monitoring reports and maintain relevant registers.
- Coordinate contractor environmental-related activities. Knowledge and understanding of SA Environmental legislation and regulations is essential.
- Knowledge and understanding of environmental impacts and aspects associated with construction projects.
- Training in ISO14001:2015 will be an advantage.

**Roles and Responsibilities** MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- The environmental specialist will implement, and maintain environmental-related processes and associated plans, procedures and standards.
- Collate and analyse data to develop/design strategies that prevent environmental damage.
- Conduct site inspections to ensure that environmental impacts are kept to a minimum.
- Participate in the review of method statements.
- Facilitate environmental awareness and induction to convey contents of the EMPR to the project team and contractors.
- Support the conducting of environmental audits on contractors
- Collate data required for the monthly environmental compliance report as prescribed in the environmental authorisation.
- Investigate and report complaints of hazardous working conditions to the project or line manager and/or other appropriate senior management.
- Coordinate registration and removal of hazardous waste.
- Arrange for Occupational Health and Safety testing and/or evaluations of the workplace by external agencies/consultants as may be necessary.
- Compile environmental statistics / month reports / review reports.
- Conduct studies of specific environmental issue.
- Assume other duties that may be assigned.
