Informatics Intern

Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) is seeking a highly motivated intern to join our new Informatics Internship Programme within AHRI’s Data Science Unit (DSU).

DSU’s strategic objectives is to provide the data science infrastructure to support AHRI’s multidisciplinary health research. As part of this objective, a strategic priority is to build our capacity in bioinformatics and ‘big data’ analytics.

If funding permits, the selected intern will be eligible to receive a full scholarship including fees, travel and living expenses to study a master’s degree in health data science at our partner university, University College London following the one-year internship (to be confirmed).

**Key responsibilities**:

- The intern will work alongside staff in Health Informatics, Biostatistics and Research Data Management at AHRI, on a variety of data science projects.
- The intern will also have attachments with AHRI faculty in the Basic and Translational Sciences, to work with more complex ‘omics’ data.

**Required qualifications and experience**:

- Hold an Honours degree in Health Data Science or Bioinformatics with a final mark of 70% or above.
- A strong foundation in mathematics
- Good skills in computer programming, with experience of at least one high-level programming language (e.g. Python/R)
- Be a South African resident.
