**Main purpose of the job**:

- The incumbent will lead the HDSS programme, providing effective and strategic direction of this programme stream, coordinating all aspects of the HDSS including ensuring the quality of data and supervising an extensive research and field team deployed across complex geographic areas.

**Location**:

**Key performance areas**:

- Programme management - HDSS and related_
- Review, develop and implement the full scope of the HDSS programme plan and strategy (current and long-term objectives)
- Effective and efficient administration and project planning including timelines, budgets, deliverables, dependencies
- Develop, design, implement and track research through project management tools, milestones and process flows
- Monitor projects’ progress through ongoing liaison with study coordinators and teams and review internal reporting
- Structuring and developing data collection modules and ensuring data collection rounds run smoothly; providing informed leadership on database design, specifications, testing and longitudinal data management challenges
- Research outputs, programme and business development, strategic leadership_
- Oversee and drive study-related communications, data collation and results dissemination
- Advise on the implementation of large multi-site demographic research and/or implementation projects and input related to unit epidemiological surveillance strategies
- Produce and increase academic outputs inclusive of policy briefs, peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations
- Provide leadership for own programmatic analysis plan/s, developing documenting methodologies and results
- Stakeholder relations_
- Manage internal and external stakeholder expectations and communicate appropriately with initiative and solutions
- Maintain high standards and successful internal and external stakeholder relations (internal relations at all levels of the organisation, and external relations with relevant public, private and third-sector stakeholders as well as academic collaborators and media)
- Staff Management and Capacity Development_
- Contribute towards the development of team/company knowledge by identifying relevant training needs and topics
- Develop and deliver relevant training material and presentations and contribute to internal knowledge sharing in areas of expertise
- Conduct ad hoc research training interventions
- Participate actively in research leadership groups

**Required minimum education and training**:

- **At least a Master’s Degree in Demography, Population Studies, Epidemiology, Statistics or a related population-based discipline**:

- **PhD will be an added advantage**

**Required minimum work experience**:

- **At least 5 years of experience managing research operations for large population-based surveys or similar demonstrable, relevant qualifying management experience**:

- **Experience with HDSS and familiarity with the Southern Johannesburg region is required**:

- **Advanced data cleaning and analysis capabilities using data analyses packages (STATA, SAS or R)**

**Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities**:

- GCP (Good Clinical Practice) understanding and certification (updated certification course provided)
- Advanced level of computer literacy and command of Microsoft Office programmes including Excel and PowerPoint
- Ability to work extended hours, under pressure and be flexible and adaptable based on research requirements
- Ability to mentor and coach others and manage performance and skills development
- Understanding of and experience leading and managing change
- Strong communication, decision-making, negotiation, and presentation skills
