Major Responsibilities:
  1. Screen patients according to level of need, assigns level of care and performs nutritional assessments of patients in assigned unit and/or clinic.
  2. Recommend modified diets and/or provide nutrition support by recommending parenteral and enteral nutrition based on diagnoses and lab data.
  3. Interact with other members of the health care team to facilitate and deliver effective patient care.
  4. Formulate nutrition care plans using laboratory and anthropometric data, medical diagnosis, clinical condition, and document findings in medical record.
  5. Write Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) orders in accordance with UMMMC Center-Wide Policy 2524.
  6. Participate in medical rounds and patient care rounds on a daily or weekly basis as appropriate.
  7. Provide education and in-service to physicians, medical students, nursing, and other members of the health care team.
  8. Provide education and counseling to patients and families regarding their nutritional needs.
  9. Monitor operation of nutritional procedures on assigned units and/or clinics.
  10. Provide direction and guidance to clinical support personnel.
  11. Maintain required documentation of patient care in accordance with professional standards.
  12. Participate in training of college or graduate students from approved affiliations.
  13. Complete assigned projects in clinical and administrative areas as necessary.
  14. Participate in quality improvement data collection and document trends.
  15. Participate as an active member of the Nutrition Advisory Committee or other Medical Center wide committees, as requested.
  16. Identify community resources and make referrals for continuity of nutrition care after discharge.
  17. May assist with managerial administrative responsibilities.
  18. May participate in research projects and submit articles for publication.
Standard Staffing Level Responsibilities:

Position Qualifications:License/Certification/Education:

Required:

  1. Bachelor's Degree from Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) approved four-year program in Food and Nutrition or related field.
  2. Current registration with Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).
  3. Massachusetts state license (LDN) is required for inpatient dietitian positions upon hire or to be obtained within 6 months of hire.

Preferred:

  1. Master's Degree in Nutrition, Science, Business or related field.
Experience/Skills:

Required:

  1. Ability to influence the quality of patient care in an advisory capacity.
  2. Demonstrated skill in analyzing problems and making decisions.
  3. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  4. Strong computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

Department-specific competencies will be developed and maintained in the individual departments.

Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:

Work is considered sedentary. Position requires work indoors in a patient care environment.
