  • Perform all key Responsibilities of a Veterinary Technologist in a Veterinary Laboratory.

Main Responsibilities:

  • To provide accurate, timeous and reliable results in all areas of responsibility.
  • The serology, Bacteriology, PCR, evaluation of samples received from production units to perform routine testing to establish a history of all production flocks.
  • The genetic evaluation of samples received from the Post Mortem.
  • The microbiological evaluation of samples received from various customers.
  • Responsibilities of a technical signatory.
  • Assist in the preparation of materials from animals for various assays, bacteriology, PCR.
  • Plan, organise and control the activities for serological evaluation using prescribed procedures.
  • Perform quantitative real-time polymerase chain reactions (RT-PCR) and PCR (Polymerase chain) assays on a variety of platforms.
  • Extract nucleic acid materials from samples.
  • Perform sequencing reactions.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, quality control in laboratory processes, e.g. checking for signs of contamination; repeating procedures, and preparing results for validation.
  • Planning, implementing and evaluating new methodology; participate in validating of methodologies.
  • Maintaining accurate and up-to-date records.
  • Writing up research findings and producing reports; planning and organizing activities within department and assisting other Veterinary departments.
  • Perform basic water analysis.
  • Ensure that all incoming samples are correctly identified and processed in accordance with prescribed procedures.
  • Ensure that examination of all samples commences as per sample receipt and handling protocols.
  • Ensure that the manager is informed immediately of any out of specification test results that may require action.
  • Ensure that all media has passed a Quality assurance test procedure and that these records are always maintained.
  • Ensure that all equipment in the department is maintained in a safe working condition and that specified items are check in accordance with protocols.
  • Ensure the maintenance of all reference cultures.
  • Participates in quality improvement programs and monitors Inter-lab, Intra-lab and follows up on these.
  • Proficiency Testing Schedules results trended and evaluated.
  • Analysis, reporting, reviewing of results, including statements of conformity.
  • Budget management: ensuring consumables are placed in the consumables order file timeously considering suppliers lead times.
  • Ensure effective stock management programs.
  • Ensure quality management system adherence.
  • Ensure effective laboratory administration.
  • LIMS logging of samples, result captures and report generation, (LIMS reporting).
  • Compile reports on the results.
  • Compiling serology reporting, PCR reporting, trending analysis.
  • Prepare interim reports when other test results are delayed and follow up with final reports as soon as results are available.
  • Manage testing cost & consumable purchasing is allocated.
  • Perform corrective actions from outcomes of audits and proficiency testing.
  • Research and implement new procedures.
  • Performs root-cause analysis should a problem arise and identify solutions.
  • To perform task of a technical signatory as per SANAS requirements.
  • Perform other duties as required and assist in the various Departments when the need arises.
  • In absence of colleagues ensure deputy roles are fulfilled.
  • Maintains safe-working practices at all times.
  • Ensuring the integrity of analytical testing and results.
  • Ensure Laboratory cleaning, housekeeping.
  • Perform tasks as per Key Performance Indicators.
  • Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the Quality System and its operation.
  • Ensure Customer satisfaction in respect of speed and accuracy, contract agreements with customer.
  • Perform tasks as requested by Laboratory Manager.
  • Promote the interest of the Company at all times by constantly searching for quicker and better ways of performing tasks.
  • Oversee all Animal Products handling and testing and sign off worksheets. This includes testing of Serological Material,Farms samples, Bacteriology, PCR and Virology. This also includes training the technologists on Veterinary aspects for sample handling.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Competency in Serology, PCR & Bacteriology.
  • Proven willingness and ability to coach and direct staff.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team or independently when required.
  • SANAS ISO 17025 knowledge, DAFF & SAVC Requirements.

Qualification & Experience:

  • Veterinary Te
