About the client:

Our client is a technology pioneer focused on improving road safety, by reducing on-road risks for fleet operators and the general public, using leading technology to proactively identify potential risks as well as providing a sustainable, internationally recognised behaviour-changing coaching platform. The driver safety coaching programme identifies over 65 risky driving behaviours, empowering fleet operators with the ability to proactively take the necessary steps to reduce and eliminate these risky behaviours, while being able to monitor driver improvements. The client currently serves customers across multiple industry types in over 50 countries throughout Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Australasia.

Context for the Role:

The client aspires to be recognised as a world-class, global provider of solutions that make all forms of transportation safer and more efficient. In order to grow in its traditional markets and expand its global footprint, they seek to appoint a dynamic and highly skilled Chief Operating Officer (COO) to manage and direct the implementation of the organisation's operations strategy to ensure the achievement of strategic objectives. The COO will report to the CEO and form part of the executive committee and participate in the divisional board.

COO Role:

The COO will oversee the implementation of the operational strategy and actively drive operational excellence and optimize process efficiency and profitability in order to support revenue growth. He/she will take full responsibility for overseeing operational activities on a global level and ensure that the company's operational processes run smoothly and efficiently in all regions, with a focus on optimizing cost, quality, performance and client satisfaction.

Key Deliverables:

  1. Strategy implementation and operational leadership: In partnership with the CEO, develop and implement a comprehensive operational strategy aligned to the company's revenue growth and profitability objectives. Collaborate with other executives to align operational goals with the overall business strategy.
  2. Operational and process improvement: Oversee the company's day-to-day operations, ensuring efficient and effective processes to achieve strategic goals across all the company's primary and secondary markets. Continuously analyze financial and operational data to identify areas for improvement.
  3. Customer engagement and stakeholder management: Build a customer-centric approach to operations by engaging with key customers, participate in high-level negotiations, and address customer feedback to build lasting strategic partnerships. Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including customers, suppliers as well as technology providers and partners.
  4. Risk management: Identify potential risks and develop mitigation strategies to safeguard operations and minimize disruptions to customer service delivery. Ensure compliance with all relevant regulatory requirements across all the company's markets.
  5. Technology and innovation: Stay abreast of emerging technologies and industry trends to identify opportunities for innovation and efficiency improvements.
  6. Team Leadership and development: Provide strong leadership to operational teams, setting clear goals and expectations, and fostering a collaborative and results-driven work environment.

Competency Requirements:

  • A minimum of an Honours degree in an operational field, e.g. industrial engineering.
  • Minimum of 15 years operational execution experience in executive leadership roles, with at least 7 years of experience as a COO, operations executive or in a similar C-level capacity in an organisation with international exposure.
  • Track record of successfully developing and implementing strategic plans and initiatives that have resulted in increased profitability and business growth.
  • Extensive experience in optimizing operational processes and implementing performance metrics to drive efficiency and productivity.
  • Experience in managing large-scale projects and driving organizational change initiatives, resulting in improved operational effectiveness.
  • Experience in developing and nurturing relationships with key stakeholders, including customers, technology providers, and regulatory authorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate complex regulatory environments and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Experience in leading and developing high-performing teams, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Proven ability to adapt to evolving market conditions, anticipate industry trends and drive innovation to maintain a competitive advantage.

In addition, the COO will have a proven track record of senior leadership in the telecommunication, telematics, video telematics or ICT industry, have excellent leadership, communication, and analytical skills to effectively manage a team of professionals and drive improvements in processes and performance.
