Role Overview

The Investment Associate will play a key role in sourcing, evaluating, executing investments, supporting portfolio companies in reaching their commercial objectives, and contributing to fund operations. The role is structured as follows:

  • 50% Investment activities – deal sourcing, due diligence, market research, and investment execution.
  • 30% Portfolio support – assisting portfolio companies with strategy, fundraising, and operations.
  • 20% Fund operations – supporting internal reporting, investor relations, and operational processes.

Key Responsibilities

1. Investments

  • Conduct market research and identify emerging fintech trends, investment opportunities, and high-potential startups.
  • Source and build relationships with startup founders, VC funds, and key stakeholders: banks, insurance, payment and card corporates, potential limited partners, family offices, etc. active in the financial services industry.
  • Evaluate potential investments through financial modeling, competitor analysis, and commercial due diligence. Contribute to drafting Investment Memos and presentations.
  • Support deal execution, including term sheet negotiation, investment structuring, and documentation.
  • Present investment opportunities to the investment committee with clear analysis and recommendations.
  • Work closely with founders on financial planning, KPI tracking, and performance monitoring.
  • Assist portfolio companies in refining business models, scaling operations, and achieving key milestones.
  • Support fundraising efforts by connecting startups with potential co-investors and strategic partners. Always be selling our portfolio to other follow-on funders and potential business partners/buyers.
  • Facilitate knowledge-sharing and networking/synergy opportunities within the portfolio.

3. Fund Operations

  • Assist in managing relationships with limited partners (LPs), preparing reports, and responding to inquiries.
  • Contribute to internal fund strategy discussions, operational improvements, and team processes.
  • Help organize industry events, thought leadership initiatives, and ecosystem engagement efforts.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in venture capital, private equity, investment banking, management consulting, or a high-growth fintech startup.
  • Strong financial modeling, valuation, and analytical skills.
  • Deep understanding of African fintech ecosystems, digital finance trends, and startup operations.
  • Existing network of relationships across African technology and investing ecosystems.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to engage founders and investors.
  • Self-starter with a high level of initiative, problem-solving ability, and attention to detail.
  • Experience working in emerging markets, particularly in Africa, is highly preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Business, or a related field; an MBA or CFA is a plus.
