Job Description

Key Role

Primarily functioning as a principal project engineer for transmission and distribution projects. The candidate should have significant experience with managing multidisciplinary engineering teams involved in the conceptual, preliminary and detailed design and delivery of substations with voltages ranging from 400V LV (AC/DC) to 400kV AC. Experience in 765kV AC would be beneficial. The candidate can be based in the Johannesburg, Durban or Cape Town office.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Management of multidisciplinary engineering teams to deliver on complex substation projects up to 400 kV AC.
  2. Depending on the project brief, the candidate shall be able to assist in the preparation of conceptual or functional designs, specifications, bills of quantity and tender documents for substation projects (11kV to 400kV) to internationally accepted standards for clients in Southern Africa and internationally.
  3. Management of project schedules, budgets and resources ensuring the project is completed on time and within budget.
  4. Ensures the engineering team complies with industry standards such as IEC, IEEE and SANS as well as the Client's standards if applicable.
  5. Coordinate project activities with stakeholders and other engineering disciplines to ensure successful delivery of the project.
  6. Manage communication effectively, especially with Clients and stakeholders providing updates on project progress and addressing any concerns.
  7. Lead meetings with project stakeholders and prepare minutes.
  8. Prepare cost estimate and budgets to ensure projects are financially viable.
  9. Preparation and review of project scope, methodology, schedules, and budgets for proposals for consultancy services.
  10. Maintaining relationships with internal divisions, external contractors and clients.
  11. Keep up to date with all technical quality management procedures, developments and specifications related to the discipline work scope.

Qualifications

Qualifications and Experience Required

  1. A Degree in Electrical Engineering from an internationally recognized institution.
  2. 15+ years' project engineering experience in the field of transmission and distribution (substations).
  3. Professional registration with an internationally recognized engineering institution.
  4. Professional registration with an internationally recognized project management institution.
  5. Previous experience with system studies and secondary plant design will be an advantage.

Key Competencies and Generic Skills

  1. Fluent spoken and written English language.
  2. Ability to work as part of a dispersed and remote team and be able to communicate through collaboration software such as Microsoft Teams.
  3. Good technical report writing skills.
  4. Ability to manage time, quality and effort to deliver a quality product within time and cost constraints.
  5. Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
