Position Overview

The main purpose of the role is to support, maintain and troubleshoot SQL, develop SQL reports and support all integrated applications.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Database Management and Maintenance : Manage, maintain, and administer SQL databases to ensure high performance, availability, and security.
  2. Backup and Recovery : Ensure all database servers are backed up in a way that meets the business's Recovery Point Objectives (RPO). Test backups to ensure the business can meet Recovery Time Objectives (RTO).
  3. Troubleshooting and Outage Management : Troubleshoot SQL Server service outages as they occur, including after-hours and weekends.
  4. Performance Tuning and Optimization : Monitor and optimize database performance. When performance issues arise, determine the most effective way to increase performance, including hardware purchases, server configuration changes, or index/query changes.
  5. Security Management : Ensure database security by managing access controls, encryption, and monitoring for unauthorized activities.
  6. Database Design and Architecture : Design and implement database structures to support application development and ensure data consistency and integrity.
  7. Disaster Recovery : Develop and test disaster recovery plans to minimize data loss and downtime in case of a major incident.
  8. Installation and Configuring : Install and configure SQL Servers, including deploying database change scripts provided by third-party vendors.
  9. Monitoring and Reporting : Configure SQL Server and Monitoring Server Application utilities to minimize false alarms. Continuously monitor database health, performance, and usage, providing regular reports to stakeholders.
  10. Technology Knowledge and Integration : Maintain knowledge of Analysis Services, Integration Services, and Reporting Services. Document the company's database environment in the company's EDMS system. Configure, test, and manage changes in integrated systems.
  11. Occupational Health and Safety : Responsible for compliance with the department.
Education and Experience
  1. Matric or NQF equivalent.
  2. Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related field.
  3. Minimum 2 years prior experience in a similar role.
  4. Basic SQL query writing and database management experience.
  5. Exposure to relational database management systems.
Technical Experience
  1. SQL query writing and optimization.
  2. Stored procedures, functions, triggers, and indexing.
  3. Database Administration Tools.
  4. Performance tuning and optimization.
  5. Backup and recovery processes.
  6. Security and compliance procedures.
Skills and Competencies
  1. Strong attention to detail and excellent observation skills.
  2. Good problem-solving and analytical skills.
  3. Good communication skills for interacting with team members, law enforcement, and other stakeholders.
  4. Enjoy working in a team but also can work independently.
  5. Be patient, tactful, diplomatic, and approachable.
  6. Demonstration of customer service orientation.
