The Wits School of Public Health (Wits SPH) is one of the largest Schools of Public Health in South Africa, with an international reputation for its teaching programmes, conducting high quality and relevant research, community outreach and policy engagement activities.

SENIOR LECTURER IN EPIDEMIOLOGY

The Wits SPH wishes to recruit a Senior Lecturer with excellent skills in epidemiology, including disease surveillance. The successful candidate will take responsibility for epidemiology research and the teaching of epidemiology courses in the Master of Science in Epidemiology and other postgraduate programmes offered by the Wits SPH. The candidate will also be responsible for leading a research niche within the Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics.

Responsibilities
  1. Teach epidemiology to Wits SPH students and short course participants
  2. Lead and co-ordinate epidemiology courses in the Wits SPH
  3. Actively participate in Wits SPH postgraduate students' research supervision and mentoring
  4. Contribute to and play a leading role in the development and expansion of the Wits SPH Epidemiology research portfolio
  5. Actively participate in the academic endeavours of the school
  6. Represent the school in epidemiology discourse and fora
Requirements
  1. At least three years formal teaching experience in epidemiology or a related quantitative field
  2. Supervision of post-graduate students to completion
  3. Ability to lead a quantitative research programme and to deliver high-quality research results
  4. Publication of at least 8 articles in peer-reviewed journals
  5. Interest in and commitment to building research capacity
  6. Active participation in international epidemiology community activities
  7. Excellent management, communication and interpersonal skills
  8. Ability to work independently and in a multi-disciplinary team
  9. Good writing and conceptual skills
  10. Evidence of successful grant applications
Qualifications

A PhD in epidemiology and/or public health. Those with clinical or medical background will have an added advantage.

Remuneration

The remuneration package offered will depend on qualifications and experience and is subject to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) regulations.
