Specialist II: Community Engagement (Temp- 3 months)

The UJ community engagement unit seeks to appoint a Community Engagement Specialist at the UJ Bunting Road campus for 3 months. The CE specialist will be responsible for the following functions.

Responsibilities:

  • Community Engagement (CE) coordination at the campus level
  • Performance of project management functions as per the CE strategy
  • Liaison with CE internal and external stakeholders
  • Identify community needs and initiate development projects with communities
  • Update CE internal and external projects and stakeholder databases
  • Recruitment and placement of CE volunteers (students and staff)
  • Training and Development of CE Volunteers
  • Supervision of student assistants, interns, volunteers and other personnel at campus level
  • Coordinate campus CE projects and programmes and institutional events
  • Coordinate CE communication strategy at campus level; including social media
  • Liaison with UJ Marketing and Communication and external media
  • Compile CE reports at campus level
  • Ability to travel between UJ campuses and the surrounding communities
  • Other related tasks in support of the CE strategy and UJs institutional strategy.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Relevant University Degree at (NQF 7), with at least three years of job-related experience
  • A University Degree (NQF 8 and above) is advantageous
  • Experience of working in Higher Education Community Engagement projects
  • Experience in working with community-based organizations (government and non-governmental organizations)
  • Experience in working with communities, community development, volunteer work and project management
  • Experience in report writing and presentation skills
  • Advanced communications skills
  • A Valid Drivers licence

Recommendations:

The ideal candidate will be a community development practitioner with a passion for addressing community development needs and demonstrated experience of volunteer recruitment, retention, and placements in community-based organisations and an understanding of social justice issues. Reporting to the Community Engagement Senior Manager, the incumbent will have proven experience in community development, driven and identity sustainable projects, and facilitate/ coordinate the collaboration process through screening and verification of community stakeholder applications, maintenance of the database and community projects administration.
