The Toolmaker is responsible for diagnosing, repairing and/or modifying all mould and tool related problems, as well as developing and manufacturing new moulds from time to time.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Mould maintenance, repairs, modifications, etc – Planned and breakdown. Once a mould is completed, to be present during start-up at the machine to ensure mould runs as required, and quality is accepted and passed by QC.
- Tool inspections during production runs. These include:
- Stopping machine to clean shut-off faces.
- Check wear pad screws and shims.
- Check screws on stripper plate.
- Check screws on tamper slides, handle holes slides and any other moving parts.
- Inspect contact area between machine nozzle and mould sprue bush for any leaks.
- Ensure mould temperature control box is working properly and set correctly.
- Grease wear pads and guide pins, and any other moving parts necessary.
- Check and update date stamp.
- Tool maintenance between production runs. These include:
- Stripping the mould completely.
- Cleaning all parts and plates.
- Replacing any broken springs.
- Inspecting hot runner for any leaks, loose tips, etc.
- Inspecting shut off faces for any wear or damage.
- Inspecting wear pads and shims. Replace wear pads if shim stock used is more than 1mm.
- Repairing wear or damage on any parts or plates.
- Replacing or repairing any broken parts on mould.
- Testing all air valves, support air, core tip air, etc., and restoring any faulty ones.
- Greasing/lubricating all moving parts.
- Assembling mould correctly.
- Testing water, air, hot runner and all other basic functions before releasing mould from service.
- Attending promptly to machine stoppages or breakdowns in the production area. These include:
- Mould heater faults.
- Broken or loose screws.
- Flashing.
- Venting issues.
- Ejector bars and couplings.
- Damaged or broken parts.
- Off Center.
- Any fault preventing successful production of a quality product.
- Maintaining quality of injection moulded products. These include:
- Burn marks.
- Flashing.
- Water marks.
- Uneven filling of product.
- Off Center.
- Product failing any functionality tests, like drop tests, lid fitment, handle suspension tests, etc.
- Organising raw materials, tool and cutter selection, programming, setting up and operation of conventional machines, and other equipment required to successfully complete jobs.
- Efficient operation of conventional lathes, milling machines, surface grinders, spark eroders, drill presses, bench grinders and any other tools and equipment required for the job.
- Housekeeping of your working area and cleanliness of machines. Routine cleaning of machines monthly.
- Providing expertise on development work (Product and mould design).
- Root cause analysis on poor product quality, poor product performance and customer complaints.
- Implement and maintain the Toolroom Mandate.
- Ensure products are kept within the Toolroom Mandate.
- Ensure products are kept within their specifications, even after mould repairs, modifications and refurbishments.
Secondary Responsibilities:
- Identifying and sorting out safety areas of concern.
- Visual checking of manufactured articles on a spot check basis.
- Recording of all related reports in the format given to you by your manager.
- Shift hand over.
- Training of staff.
- Assisting in other departments when required.

- Complete all required work within the deadlines, as per schedule of work.
- Develop and implement costing for every completed job separately on a spreadsheet.
- Develop and implement a mould history record.
- Ensure every job card is captured on Job Card Register, and filled out correctly for capturing.
- Develop and implement a stock list of cutters used on conventional machines. Maintain the minimum stock items monthly.
- Ensure machines are thoroughly cleaned monthly.

Education and Experience:
- Minimum 3 years' experience in similar position.
