Job Description

To ensure efficient, competent civil or structural designs.

To produce accurate design documents that will ensure successful project execution.

Project Life Cycle
  1. Develop a discipline strategy and design criteria to suit the unique project/client requirements
  2. Adhere to the project program
  3. Ensure planning of activities are regularly monitored and updated to achieve project deliverables timeously. This includes the expediting of technical information through continual engineering input to external and internal stakeholders.
  4. Attend relevant project meetings and produce regular project status reports
  5. Generate post-project feedback
Design
  1. Produce cost-effective and safe civil/structural designs
  2. Produce tender and project civil/structural designs. Compare and assess project vs tender scope
  3. Review alternatives and cost effectiveness
  4. Produce quantity and man-hour budgets and list associated with scope
  5. Work closely with-in scope, quantity budget and man-hour budget
  6. Understand project scope, quantity allowances and man-hour budget
  7. Monitor changes to scope and effects to quantity and man-hour budget and ensure authorization to changes and compliance with quantity allowances
  8. Verify civil/structural engineering software packages
  9. Be fully conversant with restrictions and qualifications of software
  10. Order of magnitude check of analysis results
Administration
  1. To maintain an effective record-keeping system for calculations, correspondence and technical information
  2. Indexing, records, design criteria and calculations
  3. Referencing to location of software input, numbers, dates and signatures.
Client Relations (Internal & External)
  1. To interact efficiently with Drawing Office and other departments. Guide and liaise with Drawing Office and provide engineering, safety and ergonomic input during conceptual layout phase and ongoing assistance during engineering stage.
  2. Ongoing review of internal circulation drawings and timeous approval of final drawings for construction
  3. Providing continual engineering input to suppliers and sub-Contractors
  4. Inter-departmental interaction
  5. Understand and respond to needs of other disciplines
  6. Adopt customer-oriented approach
  7. Co-ordinate delivery of information
Legislation Policies & Procedures
  1. Adhere to Company specifications, guidelines and statutory codes of practice
  2. Safety
  3. Apply global SHE standards and ensure compliance
  4. Quality
  5. Regularly review and contribute towards improvement of procedures and systems
  6. Ensure all QA procedures and guidelines are followed in all daily activities
  7. Participate in quality assurance audits
  8. Monitor vendor quality
  9. Monitor site quality
  10. Systems and Procedures
  11. Ensure adherence to the internal Project Management Operating System
  12. Apply and review associated discipline Engineering Standards
  13. Approve all drawing issued for construction by signing, dating and including the engineer/technologist's professional registration number
Continuous Improvement
  1. Provide suggestions for improving internal work methods and procedures and technological solutions on an ad-hoc basis, according to customer's needs
Qualifications
  1. Professionally, the successful candidate will be a B.Sc. / B.Eng. or B. Tech graduate and will be registered as a professional engineer or be in a position to register within 12 – 24 months of joining SGS Bateman.
Skills and Experience
  1. A proven track record of 5 to 25 years' experience executing projects in the EPC/EPCM environment; ideally within the mining and minerals (preferred) or petrochemical sector
  2. Project Management - Knowledge of basic project management methods and knowledge of all project life cycle phases
  3. Civil & Structural Design Criteria - Applications and improvements of technical knowledge into design criteria that suit project requirements. And/or support the design of new components/equipment
  4. Commercial Principles - Understanding of contract types and of their main features (basics, purchasing and selling conditions, partnerships, claims, logistic aspects etc.) including international contracts
  5. Technical Documentation - Ability to create, understand and communicate technical specifications
  6. Plant Layout development - Ability to layout the plant in a functional, safety, cost-effective way.
  7. Materials Fundamentals - Knowledge and understanding of basic information regarding materials and their properties used in engineering and manufacturing activities
  8. Construction & Commissioning - Understanding of on-site construction work such as commissioning or customers and suppliers' interactions
  9. Civil/Structure Investigation - Ability to evaluate failures, preventative maintenance and assessment of existing structures
  10. Dynamics Structure - Knowledge of design technique of dynamic structure (including vibration)
  11. Cost Estimation - Understand cost of design (including cost of deliverables generation) and ability to estimate costs related to a project or specific activity
  12. Basic IT Tools - Office Automation and Graphic Software
  13. Procurement - Understand of project cost control, budgeting, procurement, purchase-to-pay and supply chain management
  14. Engineering Calculations - Knowledge of engineering calculation techniques
  15. Quality Engineering - Knowledge of quality methods, management systems and procedures and/or understanding of quality features of products and parts
  16. Quantity Estimation - Ability to estimate quantity for structures design (volumes, dimensions, masses, weights etc.) to better fit the technical specifications
  17. CAE Software - Familiarity and ability to use specific CAE software including setting up systems, procedures and guidelines e.g. PROKON and Strand7
  18. Legislation and Standards - Knowledge of sector specific law (e.g. Engineering safety requirements, Audit regulations, Insurance laws etc.) and knowledge standard specifications (e.g. Plant layout requirements etc.) including the ability to integrate these standards.
  19. Innovation & Adaptability - The ability to adapt to different environments (team, technologies, countries etc.) from a technical point of view, including ability to find out new possible technological solutions according to customer's needs.
