Engineering Project Manager

The Engineering Manager is part of the Engineering team. The purpose of the Engineering Manager role is to effectively ensure that the facilities, layout and machinery used to produce new and existing materials and goods run to their maximum efficiency and output. This includes total preventative maintenance, managing breakdowns of mechanical, electrical and robotic equipment (including software programming). Includes people management and budgetary/cost reporting. The incumbent will be the appointed 2.1 in terms of the General Machinery Regulations under section 2 Supervision of Machinery (b, c and d).
Accountable for:
- Leading the site Maintenance function in providing both a reactive and proactive, multi-skilled maintenance service on all operational equipment and facilities, associated sites and infrastructure.
- Planned scheduling creation and overseeing the adherence and timely completion of work carried out.
- Increase the site operational effectiveness, improve on project delivery, mean time between failure and downtime reduction, and manage and implement improvement plans, driving Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) ensuring that Food safety, Quality, Health, Safety and Environmental requirements are adhered to.
- Manage the team on technical best practice and establish standard policies and procedures whilst also mentoring and leading the department.
- Implement and manage continuous improvement and modern manufacturing principles by highlighting deficiencies and recommending changes in training, working practices and processes.
- Managing multiple shifts of Maintenance Supervisors and millwrights.
- Ability to develop and implement long-term financial strategies for a budget of R100m.
- Supervise direct reports including the Maintenance Manager, Site Engineer, and Facilities Manager.
- Collaborate with various teams such as Production, Supply Chain, SHEQ, Payroll, HRIS & Admin, and HR Generalists.
Key Responsibilities:
- Strategy Development: Contribute to the creation and implementation of best practice maintenance strategies, policies, and procedures to enhance operational performance, support new business initiatives, and collaborate with professionals to improve production facilities.
- General Task and Management: The candidate must effectively delegate maintenance issues and small projects to the appropriate team members, adhere to daily and weekly checks for smooth site operation, and develop a Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) schedule. They will manage both internal and external work to maximize planned downtime and reduce unplanned downtime, ensure machine availability, optimize equipment performance, and maintain high standards of data accuracy. Additionally, they will oversee the introduction and disposal of machinery, attend meetings, produce reports, undertake continuous training, perform corrective actions, identify business improvement opportunities, provide technical expertise, manage contractors, ensure compliance with safety and quality policies, and reduce breakdowns while improving reliability and safety of plant and personnel.
- Project Management: The candidate must manage, coach, and develop a high-performing Maintenance team to achieve agreed objectives and continuous improvements. They will set department objectives and KPIs, review and assess the performance of direct reports, and report on target achievements while identifying necessary actions. The candidate will promote high standards through personal example, ensure adequate staffing levels, motivate and coach the team, monitor task completion, and maintain performance records. Additionally, they will review and update company records, communicate KPIs from the strategic plan, and manage staff discipline to ensure operational success.
- Financial Budget and Control: The candidate must take responsibility for maintenance budgets, prepare annual budgets and forecasts, and manage all capital expenditure proposals while ensuring compliance with legal standards. They will oversee the budget from project identification to completion.
- Relationship Management: The candidate must work as part of the Management team to share ideas and implement continuous improvement activities, ensuring quality standards and optimizing results. They will develop and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, collaborate and negotiate with key stakeholders to ensure compliance with the maintenance strategy, and communicate the impact of market changes on engineering design and development. Additionally, they will liaise with other departments, customers, suppliers, and service providers to maintain effective interfaces and recommend cost-optimized solutions without compromising quality or service.
Qualifications and requirements:
- B Tech/Degree in Mechanical engineering or BTech /Degree in Electrical engineering
- GCC
- Minimum of five (5) years' Management experience
- Extensive plant level experience with significant proven man management experience
- Experience of managing Profit and Loss (P&L) responsibilities for maintenance.
- In-depth understanding of Food Safety, Health & Safety regulations, Quality and Environmental standards, and all other Company policies and procedures

- The candidate must be authoritative to halt maintenance activities and production processing at any stage if a high food safety or health and safety risk is identified. They should also deny access to contractors who do not comply with the company's code of conduct and remove any contractor from the site who fails to maintain company safety standards.
Remuneration:
- CTC: R1.4m - R1.7m
- The base salary, along with bonus/incentive opportunities and benefits, will be provided according to the terms outlined in the contractual agreement.
