Job Description

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

To outline the responsibilities and authorities the Technician has in relation to post requirements of managerial, technical and key support personnel.

Specific Responsibilities
  1. Must be able to record, evaluate and validate instrumentation for specific job data (LECO, XRD, XRF, OES & Wet Chem).
  2. Completes tasks within the allocated time and plans work for operators to ensure that overall service goals of the laboratory are met.
  3. Responsibility to perform routine and non-routine Analytical operation on specific instrumentation (LECO, XRD, XRF, OES & Wet Chem) if and as required.
  4. Responsibility to ensure turnaround time is adhered to at all times, for work specified in regard to instrumentation analysis.
  5. Responsibility to perform all analysis.
  6. Responsibility, under the guidance of instrumentation seniors, to assist in the work required to validate any new methods or modifications made for analysis.
  7. Responsibility to bring all problems (technical and managerial) to the attention of the seniors.
  8. Responsibility to adhere to quality protocols required for accreditation of instrumentation chemical analysis.
  9. Responsibility to adhere to all quality, health and safety rules and regulations.
  10. Responsibility to ensure that the housekeeping for general working area is kept up to standard.
  11. Complies and conforms to Laboratory Quality Management System (ISO17025).
  12. Responsibility to record any day-to-day repairs, maintenance, calibration and verification of instruments performed.
  13. Responsibility to ensure correct consumables and chemicals are used for instrumentation chemical analysis.
  14. Responsibility to work in other areas of the instrumentation laboratory, Analytical Services and/or Divisions if asked to do so.
  15. Adhere to all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system.
  16. Perform any other reasonable tasks as assigned by direct line manager.
COMPLIANCE & AUTHORITY
  1. Cease the use of any equipment that may be deemed to constitute a safety hazard or enter hazardous environments without the necessary knowledge and protection and report the situation to higher authority to take action.
  2. Cease to carry on with work that may affect the quality (integrity) of services and report the situation to higher authority to take action.
  3. Initiate a formal improvement request when a deviation of the system occurs, possible improvements are identified or when nonconformity is identified.
Qualifications
Education
  1. Matriculation, with Mathematics and Science.
  2. B.Sc. degree or relevant diploma in Analytical Chemistry.
Experience
  1. Operational experience in a SANAS 17025 accredited facility.
  2. LIMS administration and operation.
  3. Experience in instrumentation, data collection, and reporting.
  4. At least 3 years' experience.
Required Skills
  1. Competent in the use of the LIMS.
  2. Must be able to do troubleshooting on instrument and methods used.
  3. Must know how to verify calibration standards / quality control standards / verification standards and Certified Reference Materials (CRM's).
  4. Managing Good Laboratory Practice.
  5. Assisting the Chemist with:
  6. Preparation of SANAS audits.
  7. Completing laboratory documentation.
