DEPARTMENT OF PRODUCTION ANIMAL STUDIES
LECTURER / SENIOR LECTURER : POULTRY HEALTH AND PRODUCTION (ONE POST)

RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate will actively participate in the following areas:

  1. Teaching and practical training of undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary and veterinary nursing students in flock health and production; the successful candidate will be expected to actively recruit additional clientele to fulfil this mandate.
  2. Clinical and flock health services around surrounding communities including providing expert services for various poultry operations.
  3. Postgraduate training including recruitment of PG students and supervision thereof.
  4. Research and publication in scientific journals.
  5. Networking with relevant industry stakeholders.
  6. Community engagement – participation and supporting student activities.
  7. Administrative and other duties as delegated by the Head of Department.
  8. Academic self-development.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  1. A BVSc or BVMCh degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification.
  2. Must be registered or willing to register for MSc degree in poultry health and production or veterinary science (if the latter then with a relevant production animal focus), and be able to graduate in reasonable time.
  3. Registration with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) as a Veterinarian.
  4. A minimum of three years of veterinary clinical experience predominantly in poultry health and production (case log required).
  5. Evidence of continued professional development or continued education development.
  6. An appropriate MMedVet-degree and/or equivalent speciality board certification in Poultry Health (e.g., MMedVet Aves) and must be eligible for immediate registration with the SAVC as a specialist in a relevant field.
  7. Over five years of veterinary clinical experience with at least two years' experience in the Poultry industry (case log required).
  8. At least one full peer-reviewed paper in an accredited scientific journal as senior or co-author.
  9. Or A BVSc or BVMCh degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification.
  10. Registration with the SAVC as a Veterinarian.
  11. MSc degree with particular focus on Poultry aspects.
  12. Over seven years of veterinary clinical experience with at least five years' experience in predominantly Poultry industry (case log required) post acquiring a Master's degree.
  13. At least five research-based full papers in an accredited scientific journal as senior author and/or co-author.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  1. Proven knowledge and competence in veterinary clinical work.
  2. Skills in herd or population level problem investigation, management interventions and consultation.
  3. Research interest appropriate to the position.
  4. Commitment to obtain a PhD in reasonable time (for candidates without a PhD).
  5. Good language and communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
  6. Generic teaching competence including proficiency with presentation, word-processing and spreadsheet software.

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  1. Experience with relevant specialised procedures, techniques and tools.
  2. Tertiary teaching and mentoring experience.
  3. Involvement in research in an appropriate field.

SALARY DETAILS
The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines.

UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
