Job Overview

This role entails a range of constitutional, administrative and human rights-based litigation and advisory work. The incumbent will be expected to work with directors, as well as independently, and with clients, counsel, correspondent attorneys and other teams. The candidate must be highly efficient, career driven and adept in working in a collegial but high-performance environment. The role involves managing all elements of the various dispute resolution processes, as part of a global law firm.

Duties & Responsibilities
  1. Consult with clients and counsel
  2. Draft legal opinions, pleadings and correspondence
  3. Manage work to support optimal utilisation
  4. Assist senior lawyers as required, acting as lead lawyer, where appropriate
  5. Offer high quality legal advice to clients
  6. Comply with risk requirements, firm policies and all relevant professional responsibilities and legislation
  7. Delegate and provide feedback to juniors and communicate progress on tasks to supervisor and team members, consulting and offering solutions on difficult technical client issues
  8. Manage, develop and strengthen client relationships through anticipating client needs and expectations; and provide prompt responses and updates on progress.
  9. Brief counsel and keep counsel up to date
  10. Support the firm and others in establishing effective relationships with individuals and groups, across the global network
  11. Uphold the firm's values
  12. Prepare cases for hearings, trial or arbitration
  13. Maintain the confidentiality of legal documents and client records
  14. Assist individual clients through the asylum process and represent clients before the relevant review and appeal bodies
  15. Litigate in civil courts, tribunals and arbitration
  16. Contribute to the firm's initiatives (e.g. corporate social responsibility and diversity and inclusion activities)
Desired Experience & Qualification
  1. Admitted as an attorney of the High Court of South Africa
  2. 2-3 years PQE in Constitutional and Human Rights Litigation / Dispute Resolution
  3. Good understanding of the pro bono landscape: key drivers for efficiency, relevant role players and client costs and expectations
  4. Solid knowledge of chosen area of law and industry sector(s)
  5. Strong legal skills, including drafting, negotiation, and project management skills; foundation level people management and business development skills
