Instrumentation Technician

Reporting to the Engineering Supervisor (GEF), this position is required to provide effective testing, calibrating, installing, repairing, and inspecting monitoring control and instrumentation devices.

CRITICAL PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES
  1. Calibrate temperature, pressure, flow, or other characteristics of instruments.
  2. Assemble, disassemble, and test parts of instruments, maintain, repair, and troubleshoot instrumentation.
  3. Audit and maintain spare parts inventory and manage documentation around instruments.
  4. Provide technical and expert advice on general maintenance of all equipment and machines.
  5. Assist in contingency planning and organizing of planned outages.
  6. Respond to outages and problems promptly and document root causes.
  7. Minimize engineering-related breakdowns and call outs in areas of responsibility.
  8. Ensure all tools and equipment are always maintained in good working condition.
  9. Ensure safety and housekeeping meet the standards as set out in terms of the OHS Act and client requirements.
QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE
  1. Trade Certificate – controls and instrumentation
  2. 5 years post trade test related work experience, preferably within water treatment operations
  3. N3 / NCV 4- C&I
  4. Valid code 08 drivers licence
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  1. Instrumentation and controls aptitude and awareness: Knowledge of appropriate instrumentation principles and practices
  2. Skills in programmable logic controllers (PLC) / Automation, SCADA, Plant Maintenance, and Distributed Control Systems (DCS)
  3. Operating principles of plant equipment
  4. Adequate knowledge of system structures and how to troubleshoot systems by utilizing the knowledge of how the system was designed to perform
  5. Operational and safety procedures pertaining to maintenance activities, including safe use of tools and hand tools.
  6. Maintain pertinent records.
  7. Read, interpret and understand data.
  8. Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in written form.
  9. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contracted in the course of work.
  10. Basic understanding of OHS Act and the application thereof.

REQUIREMENTS
  1. Medically fit in line with client requirements: Treatment plant environment, exposure to noise, vibration, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases, solvents, toxic materials, hazardous chemicals within the allowable exposure limits as defined by Department of Labour.
  2. Exposure to all types of weather and temperature conditions.
  3. Working in confined spaces.
  4. Working at heights.
  5. Work and/or walk on various types of surfaces including uneven surfaces.
  6. Enough physical ability to perform moderate to heavy lifting, standing and walking for prolonged periods of time, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and operating motorized equipment.
  7. Good hand-eye coordination.
  8. See in the normal visual range with or without correction to read computer screens and printed documents and to operate equipment.
  9. Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.

This position is regional, and the employee will be seconded to plants within the region to conduct work.

As such, the employee:

  1. Must own a vehicle
  2. Be willing to travel
  3. Have own accommodation within the region
  4. Standby duties after hours and over weekends.
