Job Description

The Technician will be responsible for analysis of assigned samples in the most accurate and productive way and timely as per relevant Test Method Instruction, assist the senior chemist in ensuring compliance with the SGS Laboratory Quality Manual as well as Health and Safety procedures.

  1. Evaluate, validate and report analytical results;
  2. Evaluate and ensure technical accuracy of analytical results reported;
  3. Monitor analytical processes and take remedial action where deviations / discrepancies arise impacting on the quality of analytical results;
  4. Consult with the section manager to address retests, result anomalies or other problems with samples or analyses;
  5. Report any apparatus or equipment which, to your knowledge, is not functioning correctly to the section manager;
  6. Use SLIM for data transfers as required;
  7. Record and file all equipment records for quality purposes;
  8. Ensure proper sample disposal and waste and effluent control;
  9. Re-analyze analysis samples when control results are not within the control charts limits;
  10. Assist with stock verification, stock counts and stock inventory control;
  11. Oversee the cleaning of the laboratory and immediate working area;
  12. Ensure that quality procedures are complied with;
  13. Ensure compliance with the Laboratory Health and Safety Act;
  14. Perform duties on all relevant workstations as required by the departmental workload;
  15. Must be willing to work overtime whenever necessary;
  16. Assist on any lower or above level when necessary;
  17. Deputize for the section supervisor when required;
  18. Assist with the training of new staff / operators on new methods and / or procedures;
  19. Assist with control and time keeping administration;
  20. Assist with overtime planning in consultation with the section manager;
  21. Adhere to all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system.
Qualifications

Education
  • Minimum Grade 12 / Matric or N3 with Mathematics and Science as subjects or N Diploma in Analytical Chemistry.
Experience
  • At least five years Fire assay laboratory experience;
  • Computer Literate in LIMS, Microsoft Word and Excel.
Competencies
  • Competent technical knowledge of Fire Assay analytical processes;
  • Able to work with technical and management staff;
  • Able to coordinate fire assay activities;
  • Able to work independently and to coordinate several activities simultaneously;
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Assists with troubleshooting and problem solving;
  • Can fluently communicate in English.
