Area Manager - Warehouse Operations

Department: Warehouse Operations

Position Summary:

The Area Manager for Warehouse Operations will oversee various clients across Cape Town, ensuring the smooth operation and optimization of warehouse processes. This role involves managing day-to-day operations, including inventory control, staff supervision, inbound and outbound logistics, safety compliance, and continuous process improvement. The Area Manager will work closely with cross-functional teams, implement strategies to enhance operational efficiency, reduce costs, and maintain high service levels across multiple sites.

Key Responsibilities:

Warehouse Operations Management:
  • Oversee daily warehouse operations, including receiving, picking, inbound & outbound logistics, and storage across multiple sites.
  • Ensure seamless coordination of inbound and outbound logistics, managing delivery schedules, and ensuring inventory accuracy.
  • Monitor workflow, space utilization, and the effective use of warehouse equipment and technology.
  • Implement best practices to streamline processes and improve operational efficiency.
Inventory Control & Management:
  • Manage inventory levels across all sites to ensure optimal stock while minimizing excess inventory.
  • Implement inventory management systems to track stock levels, monitor movement, and ensure accuracy.
  • Conduct regular audits and cycle counts to identify and resolve discrepancies.
  • Ensure timely and accurate order fulfillment, reducing backorders and delays.
Staff Supervision & Development:
  • Lead and manage warehouse staff, including training, scheduling, and performance evaluation.
  • Develop leadership skills within the team by fostering a positive, productive work environment.
  • Handle employee relations, including coaching, discipline, and conflict resolution.
  • Drive team motivation and productivity to align with organizational goals.
Safety & Compliance:
  • Ensure adherence to safety protocols, warehouse policies, and regulatory requirements (e.g., OSHA).
  • Conduct regular safety audits, identify risks, and implement corrective actions.
  • Organize safety training for staff and maintain compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Monitor equipment and warehouse conditions to ensure a safe working environment.
Process Improvement & Operational Efficiency:
  • Analyze warehouse operations across various clients and identify areas for improvement in workflow, layout, and equipment usage.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives to enhance processes, reduce waste, and increase productivity.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (e.g., procurement, logistics, and customer service) to optimize operations.
  • Manage warehouse systems and technologies (e.g., Warehouse Management Software) to improve performance.
Reporting & Documentation:
  • Prepare and maintain accurate reports on warehouse performance, KPIs, inventory levels, and operational efficiency metrics.
  • Ensure operational documentation is complete, accurate, and compliant with company policies.
  • Use relevant technologies to monitor and report on warehouse performance.
Logistics Coordination:
  • Manage relationships with suppliers, carriers, and third-party logistics providers to ensure timely deliveries.
  • Coordinate inbound logistics, including receiving goods, verifying shipments, and handling returns.
  • Oversee outbound logistics, ensuring timely dispatch, accurate order fulfillment, and proper documentation.

Qualifications:

  • Tertiary qualification
  • 3-5 years of experience in an operational role (preferably in warehouse or logistics management)
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and warehouse management software (e.g., SAP)

  • Technical: In-depth understanding of warehouse operations and technology.

  • Attention to Detail: Accuracy in inventory management, reporting, and operational processes.

This role requires someone with strong leadership and operational expertise, capable of managing multiple clients across Cape Town while ensuring consistent, high-quality warehouse operations.
