Special Conditions:

  1. 40 hour, 5 day week.
  2. Standby duties on a roster basis for which an allowance is payable.
  3. Undertake Switching Operations, including isolating, earthing and issuing work permits for which an allowance is payable.
  4. Protective clothing as per PPE.
  5. Overtime Category: III. Employees must be required to work overtime to meet the exigencies of HV Operations.

Job Purpose:
To manage a group carrying out the maintenance and/or construction work associated with the High/Medium Voltage infrastructure in the most effective and efficient manner.

Key Responsibility Areas:

  1. Responsible for the construction, maintenance, installation, commissioning, operation, repair and testing of high and medium voltage plant and associated equipment from low voltages to 275 kV.
  2. Perform administrative functions for accurate recording of operational information.
  3. Support and promote the safety and accident prevention in the workplace.
  4. Manage staff performance and productivity.
  5. Performs training functions.

Essential Requirements:

  1. Trade Tested Artisan (Electrician).
  2. In possession of a NTC2 or NCV3 in Electrical Engineering from a Further Education and Training College registered with the Department of Education.
  3. Valid motor vehicle driving license (Code B or EC1) as applicable.
  4. Valid Professional Driving Permit (PrDP) or to be obtained within 6 months from date of appointment as applicable.
  5. Valid First Aid Certificate or be trained within 6 months from date of appointment.
  6. (For posts requiring switching) Must be authorised in terms of eThekwini Electricity Systems Operating Regulations to operate on Medium Voltage.
  7. Must be authorised in terms of eThekwini Electricity Systems Operating Regulations to operate High Voltage up to and including or 275kV or be in a position to be authorised within 9 months of appointment.
  8. Must pass a proficiency test set by the department to prove sufficient general knowledge of HV plant fundamentals and philosophies.
  9. 5 years relevant experience as a competent Electrician in terms of the Code of Practice A/16 of which 3 years must be in the installation and maintenance of the types of equipment associated with the HV Operations.
