Mechanical Project Engineer

Sappi North America Sappi Cloquet, established in 1898, produces high-quality graphic papers used in premium magazines, catalogs, books, direct mail and high-end print advertising for the fashion, automotive and travel industries, as well as speciality papers. Cloquet manufactures Verve, a dissolving pulp used for the textile and home goods markets. This position will provide Project Engineering support for the Cloquet Mill. Main duties include engineering and managing capital projects from scoping through successful start-up. Work will consist of managing designers, vendors, consultants, and contractors as required to complete projects in a safe, cost competitive, and timely manner. Occasional maintenance technical support will also be required. Responsibilities: Manage capital projects through all phases including pre-feasibility study, conceptual design, execution planning, detailed engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, optimization, and close-out. Develop scope of work, schedules, and estimates for capital projects as required for budgeting Provide technical engineering and project management oversight for the design, installation, and maintenance of plant systems. Assist with troubleshooting related to operations and maintenance Work within multiple project timelines Make safety a priority in all aspects of the job – from personal safety, managing vendors and contractors, and ensuring project are installed and implemented with proper safety reviews and considerations. Experience and education requirements / preferences: A Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, or equivalent. A minimum of 2years' related experience; industrial project management experience is preferred. Experience in applying leadership and team skills. A working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Project), SAP, and AutoCAD Experience with problem solving and decision‑making techniques (i.e. Kepner Tregoe, six Sigma, etc) Perform root cause analysis and work with operations and maintenance to resolve repetitive issues and increase quality and productivity Proficiency in the development and management of long‑term plans and budgets, project management, and the reconciliation of actual expenditures to budget Strong verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills are required.
