UWC Sport Bellville, Western Cape, South Africa Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research & Innovation Post Number: 2148 Faculty/Department: University of the Western Cape – Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research & Innovation Type of Position: Fixed Term Contract Length of Contract: Five (5) year contract with the option of renewal Location: Main Campus – Bellville, WC ZA (Primary) Closing Date: 18/01/2026 Role Overview The University of the Western Cape (UWC) seeks an established, distinguished scholar to lead its research and innovation agenda as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC): Research and Innovation. The successful candidate will inspire excellence, shape research strategy at scale, and position UWC as a continental and global contributor to knowledge production and innovation. Key Responsibilities Lead the university’s research and innovation portfolio, in collaboration with internal and external partners. Oversee research development and postgraduate support; technology transfer; research policy and implementation. Manage library services, gender equity unit, e-research, and the centre of excellence in food security. Report to the Rector and Vice-Chancellor and contribute to the University Executive’s strategic direction. Demonstrate strategic insight and scholarly leadership to deepen UWC’s research identity and innovation impact. Desired Qualifications and Experience A doctoral degree and eligibility for appointment at a Professor level. Deep insight into tertiary education (teaching, learning, research, innovation, professional support services) developed over 10+ years of management experience. At least five years of senior management experience at a second, third or fourth tier organisational level, or equivalent senior academic rank (Senior/Distinguished Professor). Minimum of 25 peer‑reviewed research outputs, including creative or practice‑based work where applicable. Evidence of sustained national and/or international recognition as a leading researcher, including success in securing research funding (multi‑institutional or interdisciplinary grants). Experience supervising or co‑supervising at least five Doctoral graduates and ten Master’s graduates, primarily as main supervisor. Regular dissemination of research in high‑impact academic platforms (journals, keynote addresses, public scholarship). NRF rating or equivalent indicator of scholarly standing (e.g., election to a learned academy, editorial leadership in a prestigious journal, or recognised international awards). Additional Leadership Requirements Strong people‑management skills and capacity to operate effectively in a senior leadership environment with multiple simultaneous demands. Excellent writing, presentation, and communication skills. Ability to facilitate transformation at various institutional levels and build strong interpersonal relationships and university‑wide partnerships. Competency in managing financial and human resources. Knowledge of global trends and strategic leadership acumen. Skills in setting up and developing innovation enterprises. Application Process Short‑listed candidates will make a presentation to the university community and then participate in an interview process conducted by the Senior Appointments Committee of the University Council. Applications must be submitted online by 18 January 2026. This is a five‑year contract with the possibility of extension for a second term. The successful applicant must be eligible to serve at least one full term before reaching the official retirement age of 65.
