Associate Attorney | Projects Join ENS as an Associate in the Projects department at the Johannesburg offices. OVERVIEW ENS is seeking an ambitious Associate with a strong interest in project development and finance to join our Project Development and Finance team. The role offers exposure to local and cross‑border infrastructure transactions, working closely with senior lawyers and multidisciplinary deal teams on complex, high‑value projects through to financial close. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Conduct and coordinate due diligence investigations and risk analyses across legal and commercial workstreams. Draft, review and negotiate financing agreements. Critically analyse complex commercial contracts, permits and licences that govern project operations. Support and participate in legal and commercial negotiations of financing terms and project documents with financiers and other counterparties. Coordinate conditions precedent (CP) processes, including the analysis, verification and assimilation of CP deliverables. Prepare high‑quality documentation across ad hoc advisory work, credit and ratings papers, briefs, client communications, presentations, and bid documents, including fee quotations and proposals. KEY REQUIREMENTS Admitted, or eligible to be admitted, to practise in South Africa in 2026. Up to one year of experience in local and cross‑border infrastructure project development and finance, with exposure to financial close processes and finance documentation. Excellent drafting skills, strong attention to detail and sound time management. Consistent delivery of thorough, high‑quality work. Ability to follow instruction effectively and work under the supervision of senior lawyers. Clear communicator with client‑facing experience; able to understand and respond effectively to client needs. Strong commercial judgement and effective negotiation skills. Collaborative and comfortable working within large internal and external teams. Client‑first mindset; professional approach to client relationship management and practice administration. Ambitious, achievement‑oriented and focused; performs well under pressure in a deadline‑driven environment. It is essential that the candidate demonstrates the ability to understand the needs of clients and to communicate effectively with them, as well as to manage client relations and practice management. The position is demanding and may require working outside normal office hours when necessary. ENS is committed to transformation and achieving equity in its workplaces.
