Mid/Senior - Data Scientist

Yassir Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa About the Role Yassir is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Data Scientist, of any level, to join our Artificial Intelligence (AI) team and contribute to key projects, such as Dynamic Pricing and Trip Dispatching. You will analyze and model data to optimize our Machine Learning (ML) systems. This role combines predictive modelling and software development to drive Yassir’s solutions and value. About The Team The AI team is part of Yassir’s central Data & AI domain, responsible for data-related activities from Data Engineering, Data Platform management and Data Analytics to AI solutions and MLOps infrastructure development. We are a global team of Data and AI / ML experts, focused on building state-of-the-art Data and ML infrastructure and solutions and fostering a data-driven culture. Key Responsibilities Become an expert point of contact and thought leader on your scope by mastering the details and principles pertaining to it. Focus areas include: optimizing Pricing capabilities (Dynamic / Surge Pricing, Discounts / Commissioning Optimization and Personalized Pricing), Dispatching, Fraud Detection / Revenue Leakage Prevention, and Personalization. Identify and propose ML opportunities related to your scope and beyond. Support requirements definition and prioritization of ML projects. Collaborate with cross-functional Engineering and Product teams. Champion Data Quality as a critical input for ML solutions and Analytics. Conduct Exploratory Data Analysis and subsequent Feature Selection / Engineering. Utilize Statistical and ML techniques for model training; validate and tune ML models. Visualize analysis / modeling results with meaningful metrics and insights. Deploy and test ML applications using MLOps infrastructure; monitor models for performance, business impact and data drift. Explain technical solutions in business-friendly terms to support Product teams’ communications and reporting. Maintain and improve technical documentation of delivered solutions. Support the Data & AI domain in developing capabilities and collaboration with dependent teams. Champion Data Culture and share knowledge across teams. Key Requirements - Essential Solid mathematical / statistical / machine learning and software development skills, supported by a Masters degree or higher in a quantitative field (e.g., Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, ML, Operational Research, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Physics). Proficient in production-quality Python and SQL with at least 2 years of industry experience (more for senior roles). Familiar with software engineering concepts such as profiling, optimization, scalability, QA testing, and cost optimization. Knowledge of statistical concepts including statistical testing and causal analysis. Analytical thinking and problem-solving skills; engineering mindset for robust applied data science solutions. Visualization skills with common Python libraries and/or Analytics/BI tooling. Familiarity with Cloud solutions and ML services; experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) is highly preferred. Experience with end-to-end ML model development lifecycle. Excellent communication skills in professional English (oral and written). Positive attitude, resilience, and strong interpersonal skills for peer support and stakeholder relationships. Self-motivation and ability to work independently including project management. Nice to have Experience with On-demand, Mobility or Financial Services companies. Experience on ML features for digital products (apps, websites). Experience in pricing/economics, fraud detection, dispatching, or personalization projects.
