Terms of Reference – UI / UX Designer (Individual Consultant) Girl Effect is an international non‑profit that builds media that girls want, trust and need. Our digital and media spaces empower adolescent girls in Africa and Asia to make choices that change their lives. About Girl Effect South Africa Since 2018, Girl Effect South Africa has been creating digital and media ecosystems that support older adolescent girls and young women. We deliver multiple products, each designed to reach girls where they are and in ways that feel natural, relatable and empowering: Big Sis – a free AI‑powered chatbot (WhatsApp, mobile web) that offers a safe space for girls to explore topics such as love, sex, relationships and mental well‑being. JiK'iZiNTO – a social content brand that inspires positive behaviour change through authentic, youth‑driven storytelling on web, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. Dichipi – a TV drama series that brings real issues faced by young women to life and sparks reflection and conversation. Upcoming Projects Mental Well‑Being & AI Innovation – deepening the Big Sis mental health space with responsive, empathetic conversations and robust safety & ethics frameworks. Coining Campaign – a digital movement that invites young people to express how they experience and talk about mental health. Expanding GBV Content – expanding gender‑based violence content and support pathways based on user feedback and platform data. User Experience Improvements – enhancing the overall user journey from onboarding to service connections. Scope of Consultancy The consultant will investigate the user experience across Girl Effect South Africa’s digital ecosystem, focusing on Big Sis, JiK'iZiNTO and related platforms. The work will build on existing personas, journey maps and research to understand the lived realities of South African youth and recommend actionable UX and UI improvements. Key Responsibilities UX Analysis – assess current UX design, conduct research (focus groups, interviews, surveys), validate findings through usability testing, analyse platform data, and deliver a detailed report with actionable recommendations. UI Analysis – redesign visual appearance of the UI, reviewing components, navigation, interaction patterns and visual hierarchy; produce wireframes, interactive prototypes and mockups. Big Sis Chatbot Mapping – map chatbot user flows, decision points, impact pathways and operator handovers; identify drop‑off points and recommend improvements. Reporting and Recommendations – produce a comprehensive diagnostic report summarising UX and UI findings, friction points, and prioritised, actionable recommendations for platform improvements. Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement – work closely with the Digital Delivery Specialist and internal teams, validate findings with chat operators and partner stakeholders, and ensure context‑sensitive recommendations. Deliverables Full user journey and ecosystem analysis with friction points. Comprehensive mapping of the Big Sis chatbot and service linkage pathways. UX and UI diagnostic report with prioritised recommendations and implementation plan. Design sprints, user testing and feedback cycles in the field. Where capacity allows, assistance with in‑scope action plans and optimisations. Who You Are – Skills, Experience and Requirements Based in South Africa with occasional in‑person sessions in Johannesburg or Cape Town. Excellent verbal and written skills in English; proficiency in one other South African language is a plus. 4+ years in design consultancy or similar role, working with multidisciplinary teams. Human‑Centred Design expertise from research to ideation, prototyping and testing. Strong Service Design, UX and UI skills; comfortable with tools such as Figma, InVision, Miro. Solution‑focused, adaptable, culturally aware and resourceful. Experience with websites, applications, chatbots and conversational interfaces. Demonstrable data‑driven recommendation experience. Bonus Points Health or behaviour‑change content experience (Sexual and Reproductive Health, Mental Well‑Being, Economic Empowerment). Basic understanding of NLP or Machine Learning. Experience designing for cross‑cultural contexts, ICT4D projects or emerging markets. Experience working with developers in agile sprints. Familiarity with Google Suite, Asana, or Slack. Your Approach and Attitude Comfortable working in complex organisations with multiple stakeholders. Proactive “doer‑thinker” with independent problem solving and teamwork balance.
