Main purpose of the job:

  • To lead laboratory and data analyses and oversee data management for genomics research projects, including the DDD-Africa project
  • Produce manuscripts and grant applications relevant to the outcomes of these research projects
  • Work closely with project management members and students to advise on and refine analytical approaches

Location:

  • Department of Internal Medicine, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (with occasional work at the Division of Human Genetics, NHLS)

Key performance areas:

  • Strong background in human genetics and next-generation sequencing analysis experience essential
  • Experience in working in a molecular laboratory, including processing DNA samples, PCR and Sanger sequencing
  • Coordinate and assist in implementing a genomics data analysis plan
  • Bioinformatics data analysis skills are advantageous
  • Ability to write clearly and logically highly desirable
  • Productive contribution to research publications
  • Ability to manage research logistics relevant to genomics research projects
  • Work with PI to identify research funding opportunities relevant to the sustainability of the DDD-Africa project
  • Identify research needs and train students and staff appropriately

Required minimum education and training:

  • PhD in Human Genetics, Bioinformatics, or related field, or have completed all requirements to be awarded a PhD Degree

Required minimum work experience:

  • 1 years’ experience working in a research environment or genomics laboratory will be advantageous

Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:

  • Strong background in human genetics and biomedical informatics (e.g., REDCap useful)
  • Must be able to work independently, meet deadlines, and work in a team
  • Should have demonstrable ability to synthesize new ideas, and self learn
  • Must be able to work under pressure and to deadline with minimal supervision
