Master's Studentship: Radar Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is a leading scientific research organization that develops and localises technologies to accelerate socio‑economic prosperity in South Africa. The CSIR has a vacancy for a Master's Studentship in Radar within the Radar and Electronic Warfare Impact Area of the Defence and Security Cluster. This position is based in Pretoria. About the Job The incumbent will undertake original research and development in radar focusing on advanced radar image and signal processing, modelling and simulation, artificial intelligence in radar, radar system and application RD&I. Research Areas Advanced Radar Imaging (bi-static/multi-static imaging, UAV‑based radar imaging, improved information extraction, multi-band imaging) Radar Signal Processing (including AI/machine learning applications) Object Classification using radar Radar Cross Section Modelling Radar‑based remote sensing applications in defence and security Radar system improvements (adaptive beamforming, MIMO, waveform design) Security and defence applications (spaceborne, border surveillance, asset protection) Key Responsibilities Prepare a research proposal to be approved by CSIR and university Write a literature overview of the current state‑of‑the‑art relevant to your research topic Perform research to solve the open research problem(s) identified in your proposal Produce a sufficient quantity and quality of peer‑reviewed publications based on the Master's research topic Compile a high‑quality Master's dissertation Successfully complete your Master's studies Contribute to extra project or student activities outside the MSc scope (max 20% of total time) Qualifications, Skills, and Experience Honours degree in electronic/computer engineering, computer science, applied mathematics or related fields Registered for a Master's qualification at a South African university (agreement with CSIR co‑supervisor) All international qualifications require SAQA evaluation Strong background in electronic engineering, signal processing and/or image processing Experience/knowledge of radar, machine learning and/or AI beneficial Working knowledge of programming languages such as MATLAB, Python, R, Java, C#, C++ and Linux Hands‑on experience in software and/or hardware development for experimentation and/or simulation beneficial Good understanding of scientific method and experimentation Good communication skills in English (verbal and written) Ability to work efficiently with a diverse team Applicants Must Attach Cover letter (max two pages) detailing research interests, problem statement, objectives and expected outcomes Certified copies of latest academic results or transcript Certified copies of tertiary qualifications Up‑to‑date Curriculum Vitae Proof of registration from university or confirmation letter from supervisor (if applicable) Recommendation letters (from relevant previous employers, supervisors and/or lecturers) What's in it for You?
