Location: Johannesburg – In Office Reporting to: Senior Manager – Tax Dispute Resolution Type: Full-Time Languages: Fluent in English & Afrikaans Purpose of the Role We are seeking a highly skilled and commercially astute Senior Tax Legal Consultant, specialising in tax debts, to join our Tax Advisory team. This role focuses on assisting clients to manage, negotiate, and resolve outstanding tax debts with the South African Revenue Service (SARS). The ideal candidate will combine technical tax expertise with strong consulting, sales, and procurement experience to develop client relationships, identify new opportunities, and drive results. Key Responsibilities Advise clients on their rights and obligations in relation to outstanding tax liabilities Prepare and submit applications for: Suspension of payment under section 164 of the Tax Administration Act Compromise of tax debt under section 200 Liaise and negotiate directly with SARS on behalf of clients Assess tax debt exposure and recommend effective legal, financial, and procurement strategies Apply consulting expertise to analyze client needs and present tailored solutions Identify and pursue new business opportunities through sales initiatives and relationship management Support clients facing SARS enforcement actions such as garnishee orders, asset seizure, or third‑party appointments Draft supporting legal submissions, affidavits, and SARS correspondence Monitor legislative changes and SARS practice notes affecting debt relief and collection procedures Provide internal guidance and training to consultants and associates on tax debt procedures, sales approaches, and negotiation strategies Maintain accurate case files, timelines, and reporting dashboards Attend meetings, alternative dispute resolution sessions, and SARS audits as needed Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Taxation, Accounting, Law, or related field Minimum of 2–3 years’ experience in a tax, legal, consulting, or SARS‑related environment Proven experience in sales or business development within a professional services environment Exposure to procurement processes, supplier negotiations, or contract management In‑depth knowledge of the Tax Administration Act, Income Tax Act, and VAT Act Proven track record in dealing with SARS on tax debt, disputes, and compromises Experience in drafting legal documents, tax opinions, or SARS applications Strong written and verbal communication skills High emotional intelligence and resilience under pressure Ability to manage multiple cases and deadlines simultaneously Strong ethics, discretion, and client confidentiality Advantageous Admitted attorney or registered tax practitioner Experience with high‑net‑worth individuals or corporate clients Familiarity with customs and excise debt processes Working knowledge of international tax debt recovery or cross‑border enforcement Personal Attributes Assertive yet professional in tone when dealing with SARS and clients Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy Commercially minded with a balance of technical and business acumen Comfortable working in a high‑performance, fast‑paced environment Strategic thinker with a strong problem‑solving orientation Team player with a collaborative mindset Salary Range Market‑related.
