Our client is seeking a skilled and dedicated Greenhouse Manager to join their team. Reporting to the Nursery Business Manager and working closely with the Tissue Culture Laboratory Manager and Nursery Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for the acclimatisation and hardening of tissue culture plants. This role involves managing environmental controls, labour, and maintaining the highest quality standards for each crop.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plant Acclimatisation: Oversee the acclimatisation and hardening of tissue culture plants, including chemical applications, irrigation, lighting, fertilization, and monitoring greenhouse conditions.
  • Quality Control: Ensure plants meet quality requirements and are produced on schedule according to the nursery production plan.
  • Mother Stock Management: Manage nucleus tunnels with mother stock, apply best growing practices, monitor pests and diseases, and rejuvenate mother stock material as needed.
  • R&D Oversight: Plan, implement, monitor, and report on R&D trial sites, mentor the R&D research technician, and ensure best plant health practices.
  • Collaboration: Work with global nursery partners to maintain plant health and clean stock practices.
  • Cost Control: Control costs and assist in annual budget planning.
  • Staff Management: Motivate, develop, and direct staff, ensuring adherence to established procedures.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records, inventories, and data for all crops and locations.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Stay current on all regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Emergency Response: Be willing to work during weekends, holidays, and adverse weather conditions to accommodate emergency needs.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in horticulture, plant science, biology, agronomy, or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience managing greenhouses or proven expertise in horticulture, integrated pest management, and plant nutrition.
  • Experience supervising staff and developing and enforcing protocols and procedures.
  • Preferred experience in acclimatising and hardening tissue culture plants.
  • Proven track record of managing research projects and leading a team.
  • Proficiency in computer skills with working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
