Peace Parks is a non-profit conservation organisation that specialises in conservation at scale through the development of transfrontier conservation areas and the long-term management of key protected areas, in partnership with government conservation agencies and communities within these landscapes. We currently focus on the development of five priority transboundary landscapes measuring over 65 million hectares throughout southern Africa, and the co-management of ten national parks and protected areas covering over 5.2 million hectares.

JOB PURPOSE

The Structured Finance Transactor at Peace Parks Foundation will be responsible for originating, structuring, and executing financing transactions that support the development of conservation projects. This role will focus on identifying and mobilising financial resources, utilising various structured finance tools such as impact bonds, blended finance, debt financing, and equity investments. The Transactor will collaborate closely with conservation experts, financial institutions, investors, and other stakeholders to design financial products that create a measurable environmental impact and generate financial returns.

The Structured Finance Transactor will report to and support the Chief Investment Officer (CIO) and work closely with the broader Peace Parks team. They will be responsible for the development of the existing conservation bond and equity capital markets programmes, as well as developing new instruments for long-term conservation finance. The Transactor will support Peace Parks Foundation on a range of other projects as required. The position will require travel related to each strategic landscape and to engage with the market during the design of products. The position offers the opportunity for career and skills development and the incumbent will work alongside experts in the fields of conservation and conservation finance.

This role forms an integral part of the Innovative Conservation Finance Division. The nature of the role encompasses a broad scope of responsibilities and involves working closely with the team to build new and innovative approaches to funding.

The ideal candidate must ensure due process, preservation of natural and cultural resources, and alignment with the overall vision and strategies of Peace Parks Foundation.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Management and development of debt capital market programmes, including conservation bonds and debt swaps.
  • Management and development of equity capital market programmes, including asset management structures.
  • Integration with Peace Parks financing mechanisms, including nature-based solutions, tourism, enterprise development and capital funds.
  • Work with the Chief Investment Officer on developing Peace Parks' impact valuation methodology.

Transaction origination and structuring:

  • Identify and assess investment opportunities in the conservation finance space.
  • Design and develop innovative structured finance solutions for conservation projects.
  • Lead the negotiation and structuring of transactions, ensuring alignment with organisational objectives and stakeholder interests.
  • Prepare detailed financial models and risk assessments to ensure the viability and sustainability of projects.

Stakeholder management and partnership development:

  • Work closely with the Project Managers and field staff to ensure products are both practical and align with Peace Parks' strategy.
  • Coordinate with internal and external teams to ensure cross-functional collaboration, particularly with conservation experts, legal teams, and risk management.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including investors, development finance institutions, governments, non-profits, and conservation organisations.
  • Engage with investors to build market acceptance of impact valuation.

Due diligence and risk analysis:

  • Conduct due diligence on potential structures, including financial analysis and risk evaluations.
  • Work with compliance team to ensure all transactions meet policy and regulatory requirements.
  • Monitor the performance of ongoing transactions and provide reports on financial and impact outcomes.

Project management and execution:

  • Oversee the successful execution of structured finance transactions from start to finish, ensuring timelines and financial goals are met.
  • Work closely with project teams to monitor financial progress and resolve any issues that arise during project lifecycles.
  • Ensure transparency and accountability throughout the financing process, providing regular updates to stakeholders.

Reporting and analysis:

  • Provide regular updates and reports to senior management on the status of transactions, including financial performance and environmental impact metrics.
  • Prepare presentations and pitch materials for stakeholders, including investors, donors, and project partners.
  • Analyse the performance of structured finance projects and identify opportunities for improvement or scaling.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • A degree in finance is required.
  • Demonstrated track record of capital market fund raising.
  • Demonstrated track record of structuring and executing complex financial transactions, particularly in impact investing, environmental finance, or blended finance.
  • Strong technical knowledge of and experience in various structured and corporate finance funding mechanisms.
  • Familiarity with financial instruments such as green bonds, social impact bonds, and other innovative financing structures is highly desirable.
  • Strong financial modelling and analysis skills.
  • Excellent negotiation and communication skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders across different sectors.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, with keen attention to detail and the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of environmental impact metrics, conservation strategies, and the interplay between finance and sustainability.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and a proactive, results-oriented approach.
