Purpose of the job:

To cover sports events, mainly soccer, assigned by the soccer editor and to write accurate and well-written stories for publication in the weekly soccer supplement Phakaaathi, as well as for the Citizen's daily sports pages and for all digital platforms.

Main responsibilities:

Produce accurate and well-written soccer copy for the weekly soccer supplement Phakaaathi, the daily newspaper and the website
Gather news from a variety of reliable sources
Generate ideas and proposals for new stories
Cover important events/issues timeously
Establish and maintain a network of contacts
Liaise with photographers about specific events
Contribute on the production side of both print and digital where necessary
Monitor analytics to maximise all stories and articles published on
Adhere to Google algorithm requirements and write with SEO and Google search in mind
Study and adhere to The Citizen and 's voice and style guide
Adhere to Code of Ethics and editorial standards and practices
Knowledge/experience
Matric and an appropriate bachelor's degree or diploma in journalism
Good understanding of the requirements across both platforms - print and digital
Wide knowledge and passion for sports
2-3 years' relevant experience
Fully proficient in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)

Ability to work accurately and efficiently
Ability to work under pressure
Ability to work irregular hours due to the nature of sport.

High degree of professional journalistic conduct

Other requirements:

Valid drivers licence and own vehicle, to enable you to drive to sporting events.
Solid references
No criminal record
